New cpu failure

After purchasing a new i9 9900kf as a replacement for an i7 6700k I went for an installation.  After placing the new cpu, with an antistatic wrist strap, I went to boot to test my connection.  Nothing happened.  After replacing the old cpu it seemed to work, but when I use the new cpu I get nothing, no fans, nothing.  I assume the cpu is faulty but I am here to check if I missed something.

Your board isn't going to support a 9th gen cpu even if the new cpu fits. I've never really seen any intel mobo support more than 2 generation difference. Either return the cpu or buy a new mobo unless there's some sort of funky bios update to make it compatible.

there's also a chance you fried the cpu because of how the power traces work

You'll either need a new motherboard, or a different CPU that's compatible with Z170? (or whatever you have) boards.

 

Personally I'd just scrap both and go with Ryzen. Much better performance for your money.

Can't believe I forgot something that obvious, but thank you for your speedy support, I will just make an earlier than scheduled upgrade for my mobo.

At least at this point you might be able to sell your old cpu and mobo to offset the cost.

There are some Z170/Z270 boards that can be modified to support Coffee Lake cpus, a couple boards are fairly easy to do and most are much more difficult from what I remember. It's worth a shot to at least google it if you have a higher end board. If you have a lower end board, I wouldn't bother though as I'd want a good board for high end cpu like that.

It was a high end board, I am not sure how I would go about that though, and I am not sure if that would be worth the risks involved.
