Motherboard VRM Tier List v2 (currently AMD only)

Jurrunio

Hello new to the Forum for posting, but have been reading and following along for a couple of years now.

I recently saw Linus mention the "AF" part number for the 2700x and i found it just now on amazon again.

I would like to know 2 things.

First which mATX / ITX motherboards from tier C would best fit this CPU?

https://www.amazon.com/AMD-Ryzen-Processor-Wraith-Cooler/dp/B07B428M7F?imprToken=kjQZd3fFpjRo3G9SxqSW8w&slotNum=32&SubscriptionId=AKIAITHHWCUVYOLSQOWQ&tag=communityhire-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B07B428M7F&th=1

Second Is it worth liquid cooling with the Raven RVZ02 Mini-Tower Case from SilverStone that i have? or should I get something else that will allow for bigger motherboards?

This will be my first PC build and id like it to last a few years before needing to upgrade. I plan to medium CAD work(up to 30GB file size) with it and play VR.

RVZ02 is air cooling only, trying to fit an AIO is only possible by using a short graphics card which limits your graphics card options and worsens GPU temperatures. 58mm is enough for some decent coolers already

bigger motherboards will make fitting more RAM easier, that's a plus

I'm okay with 2nd gen for now. I'll upgrade to something better when I've got more to spend on it.

Any recommendations? My local microcenter salesman didn't have any good ones when I asked. I have toyed with just running lines to an external AIO setup. It's an option to me if not pretty.

3600 is not much more expensive, and it will beat the 2700X with its single core performance in CAD work and gaming.

ID-cooling IS-60, if possible a better 120mmx15mm fan.

I'm talking about it's lack of RGB headers or LEDs built onto that board. You can add expansion stuff like controllers for that, otherwise every board with multiple PCIe slots support wireless and TB3 "because you can add cards to it"

No, it DOES have RGB header(s), just not sure if it was 2 or just 1

Question about AMP draw, as a part of me is curious about pushing my 1700 further with a better board (and maybe getting a 12+ core CPU!) - however I was surprised as I regularly put 100+ amps through the ASRock B450 Pro4 when pushing benchmarks.  I do have great airflow (through custom loop, rad in every place that can hold one) so can you elaborate how it ends up in the 75 amp section?  Im also maxing out a 1700 with this board (compared to other benches available to view, with liquid or air but not LN2)

Tier E: 75A current draw on little ambient airflow, maxed out 1600X and 3600X, a bit more than maxed out 2500X

Just to check I ran a run, 131amps or am I reading this wrong?

Yes you're right, it has 1 RGB header. Guess people really like LEDs on the board itself then

What if you use Ryzen Master or HWinfo instead of HWmonitor?

there are of course accuracy problems of the onboard sensors.

I just come across this

Guess insdustrial heatsink design (compared to flamboyant but not quite functional heatsinks on other cheap Asrock boards) does work, even if you only have 2/3 the components left behind them

Yup Ill do a pass with HWinfo and Ryzen Master (haven't downloaded that software yet) and see the results tonight.  To me, Im fairly impressed with my ASRock B450 Pro 4 and trying to justify replacing it for a X570 to first push the 1700 that last iota, then to replace the 1700 with either the current release of processors or next if still on AM4 platform.

I have a hard time selling hardware tbh - basically comes down to this feeling inside that feels great when I stare at my pile of hardware that I can mess with and create a computer out of when I have an itch to scratch and as soon as I sell something or give it away or trade it - I feel some odd regret lol.

Was the same way for my gun collection - up until the point I had kids (catalyst) - used to have 65 in my collection, now only own 6 (sold what I didn't "need") and the catalyst was enough that I didn't feel any regret selling any of them, it actually felt good.

The other part of me, hates dealing with people face to face in general (and I have to a bunch already every day) so setting myself up to talk to strangers and spend any time doing that I just don't find worth my time or energy.

That's at 4.1 @ 1.39375vCore, cant get a CineR20 pass at 4.2ghz @ 1.4vCore (or 1.45vCore lol).  Can get 4.2ghz on other benches just not CineR20 and Prime95 shuts me down in under 5 minutes (not due to heat).

My curiosity leads me to wonder if its the board and if I can push this chip further.  Or if its my complete lack of actual OC knowledge as I am not making any adjustments in BIOS sans vCore and frequency.  (and with a new board comes more coars bwuahahaha).

Ill do a run with Ryzen Master tonight, if after all those runs will the board still remain in the tier of 75A?  I totally understand if that's what its rated for why its in that category, or did I get a golden board as well as a chip (lucky me!)

Looks like Jurrunio already moved that one up to 100A/Tier D and moved the X570 Pro4/PG4 up to 160A/Tier B.

No dice for Ryzen Master, after some searching:

"DC Current (amps) and Power (Watts) reported for Ryzen 2000 Series CPU and APU processors"

I don't have a lot of the options.  Its basically just displaying my BIOS settings :(

Yeah I have no idea Im just pushing buttons, but interesting the boards keeping up (albeit I have a 200mm side intake fan on the board, as well as 6 120mm exhaust fans around it on the 2 radiators so in reality quite the wind tunnel)

I feel like I'm going to ask a stupid question here but i cant seem to decide between a few boards for the R7 3700X

Would the Asus Prime X570-P be a good choice? Its in my price bracket (around £150-£170)
Or would it be better going for a lower rated board from the list and spending the extra on a better cooler?
