IPS vs TN? Main Use: Photo Editing, Secondary: Gaming

Hi there,

 

I've been doing heaps of research and can't make up my mind. I'm an amateur photographer, but also a casual gamer. The main games I play are CSGO, R6S, COD and Garry's Mod.

My current monitor is a BenQ XL2720T from 2013. I'm torn between the response times of TN and the colours of IPS. Looking to spend no more than $400 AUD ($275 USD), ideally around $300 AUD ($200 USD) would be better.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Are there any decent TN's with good colour?

No. Their color depth maxes out at 6 bit with FRC to emulate 8 bit, while plenty of IPS out there are native 8bit if not 10 bit (probably not in your budget though)

Don't use TN monitors for anything if possible. TN is rubbish and when put beside even the worst looking IPS screen they are still terrible.

 

Like the first thing you notice is the lack of the rubbish dither from the FRC.

 

Also it depends on the screen. Glossy screens are horrific for eyes, and are basically just for watching movies. If you try to do work on them you'll hurt your eyes.

 

Some people prever S-PVA monitors, but in general you're better off with the IPS screen unless you're doing competitive gaming and are trying to squeak out every possible thing that could add lag.

If you're doing photo editing the answer is always IPS.

TN < VA < IPS

The IPS panel is outstanding with rich colors and usually 10bit or (8bit + A-FRC).

I would definitely go for an IPS panel.

I've been looking at the MSI Optix 27" 1080p 144hz. It's a VA panel. I just think that IPS panels are fairly expensive, and considering how far TN's have come since 2013, perhaps a VA is a decent compromise.
