how to overclock 9600k on z390 aorus elite

so idk how to oc, never done it before, i just have the gigabyte app center for an all core 4.6 and i dont know how to oc it, i'd like to get around 4.9 ghz. the vrm should be able to handle it and i have the cooling performance of a nh d15s

well, you set 49 as the multiplier, select a voltage (lets say you start at 1.25v) and you see if it's stable. If yes, more testing, if no, detemin if it's cooling or voltage, and correct as neceeccary, say maybe going to 1.275v or increasing fan speed

Go in BIOS. Set CPU multiplier to 49. Set vCore LLC to Turbo\High. Set CPU vCore voltage to 1.32V, in steps of 0.01V raise if unstable until stable and add one\two steps, no further than 1.4V (and even then keep your thermals under 90°C), if still unstable then lower multiplier. When stable then raise multiplier and repeat again. When maximum stable multiplier has been reached then lower voltage to lowest stable value. Stress test between the steps with OCCT\Linpack\Prime95.

i'd start higher on voltage then go down 1.35v 4.8, if your cooler can't handle it lower the voltage, if the temps are acceptable, try 4.9.

A few things though:

CPU Internal Loadline setting - keep that at auto.

- No need to increase the cache ratio too far. Can cause stability issues. I used 45 for my 9600k.

 

It's pretty much the same for all 9th gen CPUs. Unless you lost the silicon lottery like me. My 9600k can't get to 5Ghz with a reasonable number of volts.

Agree, but if he can withstand a 20 minute session he wont have to worry about long term gaming sessions either (or fluctuation in ambient temps being its winter, at least where I am, so my temps are all a little better :) )

Noooot really. SmallFFT is for temp testing, really meant for 10 minute runs to get an absolute worst case max temp. Blend is for stability, run it for 4-8 hours. Or run realbench, also another good stability test.

It would be very hard to. I've had CPUs hit 93C in Prime95 smallFFT, then sit in the 60s-70s in games. Real world temps are usually 20C or so lower. 

My personal opinion on the test - and the reason is, for me, very sound - I work to ensure my thermals are in check - cause I put baby (thermals) in the corner.  :)
