5G is coming, thoughts?

Do you think 5G will be much better then 4G? And what new opportunities will 5G provide for the future?

Define "better", but no, it doesnt mean much for me as %99 of the workload I do on my phone is can be done perfectly fine on a 3G connect on.

More opportunities to milk consumers with "up to" bandwidth you'll never achieve in real life.

Other than that, faster mobile internet, if it works as advertised.

i remember when 4g came out in my country, and at the time so little people had 4g that it was very fast, much much faster than home internet at the time

then slowly more people started using and it went straight back to about how you would expect data speeds would be

coverage is the issue. if they can fix that without it being crap when you walk into a building & or what not.  Lets just see where it goes.

Details separate people.

Companies don't need more speed, they need guaranteed uptime and consistent bandwidth.  You'd be surprised how little usage a company uses.

I mean its already here... The problem is that it literally covers 50% of the 3 major cities only. And at the same time I get 3G or slower speeds at random spots in same area. So I hope they fix existing issues first as there will be no way that many people who are willing to pay for 5G speeds €50/mo instead of €10 for 4G (or €25 for full speed 4G).

I have 3GB of data, getting there faster wouldn't help. Better coverage > faster speeds on a mobile phone.

Good 4G can get you 130Mb/40Mb consistent, which is sufficient for any usage.

Better put 4G in the subway pls, dont care about 5G

5G has huge potential, and it will definitely be better than 4G...however not right away. It'll take years before it's in enough phones and areas to really make a difference, as well for the tech to mature.

Just as 4G, when it arrived. It was very spotty, phones used tons of power, it was generally a pretty poor experience. Over time it improved dramatically.

Speeds have nothing to do with caps.

17 hours ago, PacketMan said:

5G is a good improvement (on the paper), but 4G is more than enough for our needs (even 4G has a cap set by companies)

So... 5G is just a lie to make us get more expensive data plans, because we could get the same speed with 4G if they removed the cap as the 5G with the cap

Also, it's an excuse to sell premium phones since they are a bit stuck (who's buying a $1000+ Jesus...)

Meaning? 5G is an improvement, but it won't make our (regular customers) lives easier since here in Spain there are lots of locations with poor Internet connectivity and nor 4G nor LTE fixed that

5G isn't a lie. That's a pretty disingenuous statement. It might be more expensive where you are but there are plenty of carriers offering it at the same price as other plans. Also, 5G is coming to midrange phones, and very rapidly. So the "selling high priced hardware" isn't really a valid claim either. Lots of people are buying $1,000+ phones btw.

Sure, that's still a lot of people, but the majority aren't buying these kinds of phones. You're talking about 297 million who don't. Plus the lack of coverage doesn't make it very appealing to spend money on a feature you can't actually use.

Right. It's lots. Which is what I said. I didn't say the majority were.

Like I said, it'll take years for 5G to be widely available. Just like 4G.

A bit of a different perspective here. I live in South Korea.

5G is already widely avaliable in our capital city (Seoul), of course with some sections that still need filling in. People have been switching over to 5G quite a lot and carriers have come out with 5G data plans as well.

I personally think 5G's going to be a big part of the future. People are going to want to watch higher resolution videos, do more things with phones, etc... 5G can provide people with gigabit levels of speeds, and help make 4G networks less clogged (at least in my area).

Of course, 5G does have its problems, namely range and infiltration. But these aren't unsolvable issues.

Fun fact, carriers in South Korea are solving range problems with 5G by literally just installing a shit ton of 5G base stations. KT, a south korean carrier, has already installed 70k 5G equpiments & base stations.

Also we already have full 4G access in subways, and wifi too.

5G has less to do with speed and more to do with congestion,  people can be wax lyrical about how good 4G is but I bet those people aren't so happy when they get into the city and the connection drops down to 3Mb/s because another 300,000 people are trying to use the same damn network within a 10K radius.  Like the poster above pointed out, South Korea is installing a well built system that when the kinks are ironed out will provide the same speeds as they have on 4G to 20 times the number of people.  That is a very important build out for future load issues.  The same is happening in Australia with optus and Telstra both rolling out 5G, they know the future population will swamp 4G and the only way to maintain a good mobile network with ample data and bandwidth for everyone is to go 5G.

Given how people are responding to 5G and the efforts US companies are putting into it then it's no wonder the US has shit infrastructure, monopolies and pricing.

TL:DR my thoughts on 5G, if none of the tech minded enthusiasts understand it,  then it's a good thing marketing works on the plebs and they'll buy it or we'd all end up with shit mobile networks.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.
