First off I'd just like to say, excellent choice. The 1060 3GB is perfect for your resolution and can even hold its own in 900p, 1080p, 1440p and in low demanding titles, 4K. Glad to see you understand the VRAM limitation. The i5-2500K is also an excellent choice for your resolution. You're going to want to look into clocking it at more than stock speed though. Imo, having a K processor and not overclocking it would be a tragic mistake. Unless of course your motherboard doesn't allow it. If you do have an overclocking capable motherboard, it be wise to utilize it and do a bare minimum manual overclock. As long as your voltage doesn't start raising and your CPU temp is in check, you're good to go. 3.4 GHz should be the bare minimum you clock it to and around 3.5 to 3.7 should be a good starting point to try and get to. Some people achieve around 3.9 but I wouldn't worry about trying to hit that because I'm pretty sure it's going to cause your voltage to raise and your CPU to produce more heat than adequate.

Wise decision. 8GB RAM in RDR2 will run but will cause stuttering at some point because the game likes to use up and over 10-11 GB of RAM. Which is why 12GB is recommended in the official recommended requirements.

With that setup, 30-40 fps should be expected. It's all about what you want really. For the game to look good, for the game to play good or for a mix of the two. Adjust the graphic settings accordingly. Understand that certain graphic settings are going to use more VRAM than others.

Here are a few graphic settings that usually require lots of VRAM. Bare in mind these will always vary from game to game.

  • Texture Quality - Medium is recommended for your GPU. You can try High provided you have spare VRAM(around 0.3-0.8 GB) to use.
  • Anti-aliasing - Best to keep this at x2 MSAA or x2 TXAA at most.
  • Volumetric Quality - This is something you're going to want to leave at a pretty Low at most Medium setting.
  • Shadow Quality - Depending on the game, having shadows disabled can drastically improve performance. Up to you though.
  • Global Illumination - Play with this one. I'm guessing it's a big hit to performance. Don't stop testing until you have concrete results.
  • Ambient Occlusion - Use whatever the medium form of AO is. High end forms of AO can hit performance a lot. Not sure of VRAM hit tbh.
  • Population Variety - Just turn it off and forget people. You don't need em' to be different everywhere.
  • Extended Distance Scaling - Best to have this completely off. Regular Distance Scaling is fine to set around 20-40%.
  • Water Quality - This one should be researched yourself to be honest. We love our water but you have to see and feel it out from game to game.
  • Shader Quality - Medium to High is recommended.
  • Reflection Quality - Low to Medium is recommended. I'd think High or above would hit performance a lot.
  • Post FX - No more than High is almost always recommended for your hardware.

Take into account how these affect performance as well. Some settings use a ton of VRAM but won't effect performance much at all and vice versa. Texture Quality is a great example. The higher the textures means more VRAM usage but usually a very low impact on performance.

Last but certainly not least, the very first thing you should do once you load up RDR2 is run benchmarks. Use the absolute lowest settings possible in the game and I mean on every single setting. This will give you an idea of the highest fps you can possibly achieve with your hardware. Once you get that number it can give you a goal fps to achieve with custom graphic settings.

It will probably run,  at what resolution is probably difficult to predict,  you just have to find good settings, the previous post above mine should probably help you to determine.  :)

That's a good tip yeah... It's what I do on my laptop... Lowest settings, then up it from there... Makes way more sense than the other way around...

I was able to play monster hunter world at 30+  fps at 800x600... Which quite frankly was rather surprising with those specs of my laptop lol
