AMD Vega/RX or RTX?

Tomsta

I'm specing up a machine for a new build of mine so i can play Jedi: Fallen Order (I'm having to build a new machine basically due to the age of my current hardware) looking at the recommended spec for the game it recommends a Vega 56 on the AMD side

I'm currently looking at trying to stay with AMD (Better price to performance) however i've heard that Vega graphics cards run very hot, even when not overclocked. I'll be gaming at 1080p

Is it worth spending that little be extra to get a RTX 2060 Super, or can i comfortably spend less to get a Vega/RX series card?

It will be paired with a Ryzen 5 3600x and 16GB of RAM

RX 5700 or 2060S. Vega 56 performs like these two if not a touch slower, but at much higher power draw. Of course it sitll comes down to prices in your region

I would prob look at the 5700xt if you have the cash for it.. dont bother with the Vega cards unless you can find them silly cheap.

What's your budget?

Properly tweaked Vega 64/Vega 56 can come scary close to performance of RX 5700 XT, but you need to find the right model to do that.

5700 XT outperforms Vega64 by about 20% at ~75% of the average gaming power consumption in techpowerup's review. And regular 5700 outperforms Vega64 by about 5% at ~55% of the power consumption. There is no reason to buy Vega today unless someone is giving you a fire sale price.

My budget for the entire build is around £800, budget is somewhat flexible (maybe max is around £900)

Approx $1050

Yes but also no. They ship running the max recommended safe voltage (1.2v) out of the box, that's the issue. If you're okay with a bit more noise, even the blower coolers are fine. Both my Vega FE (blower) and Radeon VII (triple fan cooler) stayed at safe temps with just a ramp to the fan profile, no undervolting required. If you wanted them to be quieter, then you'd undervolt, they'll often do stock clocks at 950-1050mv, way lower than the stock voltage. Good AIB cards get rid of the heat issues with properly beefy coolers, not really an issue there.

To help more with your decision making, my 1660 Ti runs Fallen Order at max settings, 2560x1080 (so a bit harder to push than regular 1080p) without issue. 2060 S would crush it as well. If you're down to make an account/sign in with google/FB/whatever for GeForce experience, you also get Shadowplay, which is really really nice for screencaps and recordings. AFAIK Fallen Order doesn't support Ansel, but you have the option for that in any supported games, and with an RTX card you can try ray-tracing if you have titles that support that. You're running at 1080p so you don't need Radeon Image Sharpening, which is the only feature advantage AMD cards really have for gamers. Only real advantage they have here is price, if you don't wanna use any of the features Nvidia offers.
