How about GTA V or watchdogs? most of the time you are just cruising with your car around the city and the controls are easy to learn :)

Hmmm. Not sure if he'd like it, since it's very in depth, but Stellaris is a pretty good game if he likes strategy. Tons of mods too, which are easy to use.

My dad loved these games:

  • The Witcher 3
  • Deus Ex
  • SkyRim
  • Red Dead 2

Some of the Dirt rally games?

Maybe some platformers like Giana Sisters?

Strategy games like Battle Realms or Rise of Nations?

Portal and Portal 2. You can pick them up for $2 on the next Steam sale (which should be in a few weeks). I would invest in a controller if possible. An Xbox 360 or Xbox One controller will work natively and will make looking around and moving easier. Not that the KM controls are bad, it just might be easier to pick up.

Make sure to quote or tag me (@JoostinOnline) or I won't see your response!

While a short experience.... generally a pretty relaxing time.
Gorgeous to look at and play through.. puzzles and some searching involved.. but not exactly an intense game.

Just one that comes to mind..

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I double Abzu, but he may have problems controlling that diver...

Portals are a good suggestion as well.

I will disregard the comment about intensity as - by your input - he clearly enjoys them, just sucks at learning them.

So I'd say intense is good unless it doesn't have a lot of depth to it.

Now my suggestions:

  • DOOM 2016 - I think he will love this one
  • Limbo - a short one but I believe puzzles are a way to go
  • Subnautica
  • The Witness
  • Valiant Hearts - he may get annoyed by slow pacing but when he finishes it he will be grateful for playing it through
  • Ori and the Blind Forest
  • Hollow Knight
  • Superhot
  • Rocket League
  • Child of Light
  • World of Goo
  • FTL and even more so Into The Breach
  • Disco Elysium - heard good stuff about it and fits my line of understanding, although don't know much about it
  • XCOM: Enemy Unknown
  • Mafia 2

I also suggest you watch these 2 vids below (a very cool experiment).

While your pa played some games already, you mentioned 3D ones confuse him, so it should still be a good input for you.

And if you want to ease his gameplay, take the advice from 2nd vid and sit there with him for a while and provide some helpful input while he plays - without being annoying :P. Just reminding about most basic mechanics should be helpful enough.

How about one of the subscription services? Game Pass/Uplay/EA Access/Humble Trove etc. Easy way to try out loads of games.

If he has a good awareness and ability to track multiple things, Sins of a Solar Empire could work. It's still a RTS, but has relatively slow pace. Fallout 3 (and AFAIK New Vegas) have excellent stress-reducing V.A.T.S. system, which could help. If he just wants a good time sink, a city builder such as Cities: Skylines could work.

How does he play World of Tanks?

Otherwise it seems like he enjoyed RPGs or "tactical" games, there's a few WW2 ones out there, like Company of Heroes.

I highly disagree, I think if he's used to a PC and plays World of Tanks using the mouse to look around is far easier. It takes people a really long time to get used to controller thumb sticks.

For reference;

He's beaten Uncharted 1, but still can't remember button placements, and even during times of exploration tends to run into walls and doesn't move the camera at the same time. They also played Call of Duty and Uncle Noly got VERY frustrated and they just stopped playing it. Haven't seen him try a PC game yet I don't think.

Another video for reference:

She has to stop moving and then use the other thumbstick to look around before moving again.

Hmm...

  • DOOM might be a bit intense for someone who isn't good at controls.
  • Limbo is just short
  • Subnautica does have good exploration and you can pretty much take it at your own pace. It's not too punishing and has forward progression and an actual ending.
  • The Witness A great game you shouldn't play. Really depends on if he likes fairly repetitive 2d puzzles.
  • Valiant Hearts I never finished, but if he's into WW2 it might interest him... Though I think that was WW1...
  • Ori and the Blind Forest I could see him getting frustrated at, mostly because it frustrated me and as such I never finished it. Pretty though.
  • Hollow Knight I haven't played.
  • Superhot could be decent, since it's first person with a basic premise and lets you take things at your own pace in a way.
  • Rocket League I haven't played.
  • Child of Light I finished, barely remember. I wouldn't not recommend it, don't know if a 60 year old man would be interested in it.
  • World of Goo I haven't played
  • FTL is very random, difficult, and unforgiving. It's easy to get frustrated and quit on it. Into The Breach is a decent turn based strategy.
  • Disco Elysium I don't know anything about.
  • XCOM could be a good choice.
  • Mafia 2 I wouldn't recommend until he gets comfortable with controls. Shooting sequences can be tough, and OP stated his dad can't drive.

I am a 66 year old dad and my favorite modern game is Battletech.

For shooting a game like Fallout 4 that has VATS to slow the action down.

For something less hectic The Outer Worlds was nice.

My next game will be MechWarrior 5 that is coming out tomorrow and then Phoenix Point since it is made my the original Xcom people.

All sort of old school.

Retro games are probably more fun for 20-35 year olds, but If he has fond memories of games like Quake and Doom and likes sort of Fantasy themed games, check out "Amid Evil", probably coolest level design ive seen in ages out of any game, and all the goodness of oldschool gameplay like that.  Probably my favorite Indy game i've seen all year.

Again, this might be more the type of thing i'd like to think 60 year olds would enjoy, but really its more appealing to young retro dudes, you know him better.

I'd still say Doom 2016 should be fun if he just wants to tear some crap up, ya its sorta intense but in a relaxing way.

So far as WWII you tried having him play WarThunder in "Arcade" mode, airplanes and tanks are fun, i'd side with planes, so long as you don't get obsessed with reaching higher levels, all the wwii stuff at like tier 2-3 (maybe sometimes 4) is probably the most fun stuff in the whole game, forget the jets.  You don't have to play it fast paced, you can just bomb shit in Air-Arcade mode.

Not sure why but i can concur, for some reason older folks really seem to like 3rd person shooter games.  Tom Clancy's Wildlands and Breakpoint were the ones that sprung to mind for me just knowing people who play them, but not having played any of them i'd trust your judgement so far as which story, gameplay, etc might interest older folks more.

The Division 2 - its the most popular (Wildlands/Breakpoint) Has the most active player base of the three. Its fairly easy I think your dad would love the game.

He mentioned steep learning curve, not controls (apart from driving) and said his father already played FPS games.

Since DOOM is just mindless mayhem he should be fine. It's a single player as well, so no problems with the whole afking part.

And such games are the best for people 60+ due to what action games cause.

Video for reference:

LIMBO lasts few hours at best, yes, but it's pretty straightforward, goes cheap and is a good opportunity to see if he would enjoy such games

Go back to Valiant Hearts and finish it. It's not long and the ending is well worth it ;).

Mafia 2: it's an engaging game with great story, a 3rd person shooter others claim people of that age enjoy, drivving is there but is predominantly just cruising and since that title seems to be be appealing it might be a good opportunity to get better/more comfortable with driving shit in games.

Get the Halo Master Chief Collection if you don't want a complicated multiplayer like an RTS. Halo has always been very basic and easy to play.
