CPU clocks droping

Karoool

Hello there guys!

I'm encountering an issue with my thinkpad t480 laptop, when playing bf3 or other games of this type my core clocks drop down to about 0.5GHz after some time playing. I don't know why. Max temps I'm getting are about 80C so it's not thermal issue I think. Any ideas?

Specs:

i7-8650U

MX150

32GB RAM

The Only thing i can think of is that your laptop charger cannot supply enough power to your battery and your GPU clocks drop to keep your system from crashing or a BSOD.

Willing to help as much as i can

Good Luck!

Well I'm using the lenovo 135W charger with a lenovo docking station, also I think that this is not the issue cause at first, the game runs smoothly with 2.5 GHz clock and it reaches around 70C, also when I once rendered a video the clocks where up and running 4GHz with no sweat so idk really..

Possible reasons :

- Over heating / throttling

possible fixes :

- clean laptop properly (needs to be dissembled unfortunately)

- replace thermal paste

- cool the laptop appropriately

Yeah, but that, in all likelihood,  *is* the issue. You need to try to keep temps in check, so around 70C.  I know it's ridiculous but that's just how these things work (also definitely check for dirt / dust)

My laptop is 3 months old so cleaning shouldn't be required. Also some time ago the issue stopped occuring for a while, then after Windows update the issue came back..

Oh ok, I agree that isn't the issue then probably.  I was just thinking that because in almost all cases of "slow laptops" it is. :)

Well in that case I'd try a rollback if it's still available, otherwise this seems pretty mysterious for sure.

Rollback the windows update to see if that fix your issues.

Well I don't think it's gonna be the best solution.. I had this issue earlier on then an update fixed it and now it's broken again, so as the next updates come up the problem will either be present or not. I'm trying to find a more permament solution..

Well I understand that but as of right now that is the best solution - you sorta know what's causing it,  and you also know how to revert it.

IF that really helps is another question of course,  but it would at least confirm your theory (or not) if this is actually caused by a Windows update.

What I would do (in that order):

-rollback to previous version you know was working better

-open up the laptop, clean it,  apply new thermal paste,  but *only* if this doesn't void your warranty (check with seller manufacturer)

I know you said it's only 3 months old... doesn't mean it can't be dust /  dirt or a poor thermal paste job necessarily tho.

-Reinstall windows fresh

- If nothing of that fixes it RMA the laptop

I don't think you will find any other solutions than the above tbh,  but who knows.

Well I'll try to resolve this issue then, maybe the rollback will do the trick
