New gaming build, where to start?

OverrRyde

Hi everyone. New to the forum and found this section which is great! I hope you can point me in the right direction.

I would like to build a cost effective gaming rig. I kinda know what I want but in terms of hardware for GPU and CPU, I am not sure what to look at, there are so many options that it get overwhelming.

I want to be able to to hit 100+ fps at the highest possible settings. Planning for 1080p res. setup. I would be playing your classic shooter games mostly and sports. I think I also want to have the option of overclocking in the future and have a somewhat future-proof setup with room for upgrade.

I also don't mind going with older hardware, I don't need to have current gen hardware as long as upgrading is still possible without having to redo a whole rig.

I should say one of the reason I want to build this is to replace a potential PS5 next year. I feel like it's time for me to join the PC gaming club! I am located in Ontario, Canada but don't mind shopping online.

Thank in advance for any input!

Edit: forgot to mention, I don't want or need any of those fancy hardware with RGB and stuff... I really want some advise on GPU, CPU and motherboard.

I'm in Ontario, Canada. Budget is flexible, but for the sake or having a number, let's say anywhere between $500 to $1000, keeping it as low as possible obviously, but I feel like that would be pretty high since I am only looking for the 3 main components in cpu, GPU and motherboard. I still need to add a monitor, ram, PSU keyboard and mouse, all within the same budget. Already have a case laying around in the basement!

I do, I would be repurposing a hard drive I have with eventually upgrading to solid state down the line. I would need power supply as well.

Thanks!

Reviving this for further input.

After review and budgeting, I think I want to go with the 2600/2600x (currently on sale). Now debating about the board between the B450 Max and the Pro4. If I am looking to "future proof" and oc'ing, am I better to pick the Max over the Pro? Would I see overall benefits for gaming in general?

The other point is the GPU: I've seen a few good used RX 590s, and the recently launched 5500 XT has caught my attention as well. 1660/1660 Super still in the running also. I had previously said that one of my "would like" to have is the possibility to achieve around or over 100 fps for games such as COD:MW (2019), Battlefield, GTA, NHL/FIFA, PUBG etc. These are the type of games I plan on playing in this machine. Is this feasible? Are the above options viable?

Thanks!

Overpriced. Get 1650 super instead. Or used rx 590/ vega 56.

@Herman Mcpootis has a decent list in this thread above. Though you could get 1 tb harddrive and rtx 2060 for the price of the vega.
