make sure you are using displayport. If you are using hdmi, you'll have to lower the settings to 4:2:2 50hz for hdr.

I've spent some time on Google. Nothing concrete but pretty sure the 970's HDMI port has not enough bandwith and you need at least display port 1.4 (which I think it doesn't have either)

Hm, not sure some pages say you need 2.0a.

It seems impossible to get a simple table that lists maximum resolutions, color depth and refresh rates. In any case, I found this bandwith calculator: https://k.kramerav.com/support/bwcalculator.asp

It seems you are limited to 4K @ 30 Hz for 10 bpp and you need a high speed cable.

(I would assume the 970 isn't really powerful enough for most games at 4K/60 in any case)

Suprisingly it runs pretty good at 4k 60

Well, I said most games, not all games. I'm sure you can do it if you reduce details, but then what's the point of 4K :D I prefer high details over high resolution, but that's personal taste.

In any case, I've found several sites that say HDR support requires HDMI 2.0a, because it wasn't specified previously (e.g. https://www.cnet.com/news/what-is-hdmi-2-0a/).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI

Quote

HDMI 2.0a was released on April 8, 2015, and added support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) video with static metadata.[118]
