i need advice

Hello everyone,I'm receiving a i5 9400 over my i7 7700 and i'm just really confused. I'm wondering which CPU is better; what GPU i should get (because i'm worried about bottle necking) I also am trying to stay above 144fps for competitive gaming. this is very hard for me because i overthink and am a perfectionist.

multicore performance on the i5 is a little better, but for a gaming PC the 7700 is superior.

 

also they use different motherboards, the 7700 will have a lot of affordable used options

yes, keep the i7 and get the best GPU you can afford. what's your performance target?

@Fasauceome I can get the 2070 but im worried about bottlenecking also i want to clarify i have the non K variant of the i7 and my performance target is above 144hz im even thinking about getting a 240hz monitor

if you're looking at 1080p 144Hz the 2070 will do well for you

@Fasauceome I was looking into benchmarks and the i5 9400 got more fps then the i7 7700 are the tests fraud or wrong

There are games where this might be the case, what games will you be playing?

 

Also, what videos did you watch?

videos that do not feature someone actually holding the product and explaining its performance are usually fake, as they can "simulate" the performance to make more videos without buying hardware. There exist many of these videos on YouTube, where it's simply a side by side video and no introduction, no talking, and no real data.

No, worry about experience and budget.

 

Bottlenecks are either the experience you don't want due to an under-powered piece of hardware or the experience you want at a higher price than you needed to pay.

 

If you get the FPS you want, at the resolution you want, at the settings you want, at the price you can afford then you are OK.

Base clock doesn't matter, the CPU will always be at the all core turbo in games, which for a 7700 is 4.0GHz, and the 9400 is 3.9GHz.

Then the best plan is to just buy a new graphics card first because you were going to do that anyway, and then buy a new CPU if you really need one, but since you already have the i7 there's no reason to get rid of it yet

The i7 7700 is still a good performing CPU, if I were you I would not buy the i5 9400 because there is no real practical gain. Instead of buying a new cpu and motherboard I would use that money on other upgrades like a better GPU, or more ram if there is less than 16 gigs already, or maybe a nice monitor.

@Fasauceome where are you getting your numbers?  I see the i5 9400 as a slight upgrade to single core over the i7 7700 and even in multi-core workloads per thread. 

 

However if OP already has an i7 7700 and is thinking of upgrading (basically a tiny upside to a side grade) - that is a huge nope, not worth it imho either.

@MadAnt250@Fasauceome i didn't have to buy it my brother is offering me the i5 for the i7 because i have a 1060 he needs and im thinking of getting the 2070 and i dont want to bottleneck and get shitty performance so im trying to figure out which CPU would benefit me the most

The closest decent comparison I can find is the GamersNexus review of the 8400 (which is almost the exact same) to the 7700k stock but judging from the lack of IPC increase from Kaby lake to coffee lake and the fact that the 9400 is slower clocked it'd be surprising to see increased single threaded performance, especially in games.

Oof, no, don't do that, your stuff is worth more than that.

The i7 7700 and gtx 1060 is not worth trading for a $145 CPU.
