Windows 10 x64

Windows 10 was originally installed (freshly installed today)

full retail version

Hardware about 1 year old. Processor was bought used. gpu is 1 week old

re-installed / reset windows today

i7 8700k

RTX 2060 super msi gaming x

Aorus Gigabyte Z390 Elite

bequiet! Straight Power 11 550w (CM)

build the pc on my own

desktop

I installed a new i7 8700k yesterday (upgraded from a i5 8600k). started to get BSOD with the same exact error "WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR". I already started a topic in the hardware cpu section and did some troubleshooting. resetting bios, updating all drivers and windows. checked cpu voltage and temps (working fine when playing games). Then crashes started to happen often only when downloading games and watching youtube videoss so general desktop usage. After not being able to resolve the issue I completely reset my PC and reinstalled windows from my ssd boot drive and it worked fine for about 2,5 hours (longest since the cpu installation). Even running some heaven benchmarks and prime95 runs. cpu and gpu temps, voltage and usage seemed fine all the way. while downloading a game vio origin and simultaneously watching a youtube video the next crash happend: bsod, same error.

Im out of ideas what causes this. I appreciate any help and suggestions

Greetings

Get the device id of hardware that causes WHEA. Open event viewer and look for Event 17 \ WHEA, post the details here.

WHEA errors usually indicate a hardware failure,

There is a possibility that your new CPU is faulty,it is supported by the fact that the problems began after a CPU upgrade.

Nothing specific in there, it's just WHEA ...

Okay, that's likely the culprit. Do you have access to any other compatible CPU ?

in both files? does that indicate towards a hardware failure?

Yup, it's just an error involving windows kernel and WHEA reporting drivers.

Oh, i've missed that bit. Then it's a definitely not perfectly good condition CPU you were sold.

it has warranty left. so i could try that. i never returned a cpu or encountered a corrupted cpu. is there a chance that i can get it replaced through warranty?

I'm no expert, but "new" CPU -> uncorrectable hardware failure -> the case is pretty clear.

Can you return it and what happened to your old CPU,  if you don't mind me asking?

Edit: I see,  well I'd return / RMA it ASAP if you have still warranty left  :)

Through manufacturer warranty ? I'm not sure, there's limited 3-year warranty on boxed CPUs, do you have a box ? But i don't know if it's transferrable or anything. Your best bet is to just contact the Intel then.

i bought hardware at the same online store in germany and you can transfer warranty with a signed formular. they will accept it. i'm already in contact with the seller since yesterday and he even gave me tips how to resolve issues (same as here basically) so i might be able to talk with im about returning it or at least try to get the warratny transferred.

i gave my old cpu to a cousin of mine. he just build a new pc but he lives about 6 hours aways so not really an option right now. i might try to get a cpu through a local retailer.

I guess the case is pretty clear. oddly enough right now im using my pc just fine for about 45 minutes downloading files. and chatting in forums.... it just seems very odd.

CPUs are very complex things, one faulty transistor out of several billions in there and you'll get an error once in a while.

another user, or actually 3 user, in this forum and the guy that sold me the cpu told me to set vcore at 1.3v with turbo loadline calibration to turbo.... to basically get the oc'd and degraded cpu running in its natural habitat i guess.

the seller still persists that the cpu was never OC'd. but im starting to really doubt that

That's just running away from the problem, nobody will want to reduce the performance of a product they paid for.

If it's faulty it has to be replaced or returned.

i was about to say. i get even worse performance in prime95 now. only 4.3 ghz but much much higher temps. thats NOT ideal... at all
