RGB power button switch

Hello,

 

I was thinking of modding my Lian-Li PC-O11 Dynamic with a RGB Vandal switch.

 

I purchased this :

which has an illumination voltage of  1.8, 2.8, 2.8 VDC (not sure why multiple values are listed) and a voltage rating of 48VDC. I have the Z390 Aorus Pro Wifi and after a bit of research, I'm pretty sure most motherboard RGB headers are 12V. My plan was to use one of my mobo's RGB header to power the switch's LEDs.

 

I also have a few resistors :

Can I just connect my LEDs to the mobo's header ?

Do I need to put resistance on those paths ?

What do I connect the negative terminal to ?

I= led current

 

U=12V-2.8V=9.2V

I_max=2A (current rating, actual current probably less)

R_min=9.2V/2A=4.6 Ohm

Can't I just connect :

RGB minus (mobo, 2 to 4) to RGB (switch)

12V (mobo) to minus (switch)  with 4-5 Ohm resistance 

?

I guess the 2A are for the button. LED should be somewhere around 10 mA.

 

No. Now you reversed polarity.

How about adding some transistors or logic chips?

I tested each LED with a 9V adapter with resistor. The only way each LED turns on is with + to a LED and - to common. So this means on my motherboard, each RGB pin is a ground and the polarity is reversed. I think I get it. I'll look for a different switch or a common cathode RGB controller. Any leads on that, let me know.

Page 3 of the datasheet shows the assignment of each wire.

Wire 1 is labeled as Vin = 5 VDC...28 VDC

Wire 5 to 7 are the RGB LEDs and are labeled as LED red GND = ON Open* = OFF

 

This tells me this switch is a common anode switch where the RGB terminals are grounds. This matches my Mobo RGB header pinout. Also, 5 to 28 VDC illumination voltage means I wouldn't be required to reduce voltage to my switch.

 

Is my understanding correct ?

What should I do with wires 2, 3, 4 & 8 ?

Should I use wires 2 & 3 for power switch - & + (respectively) ?

I found a cheaper option, just some lack of information on the distributor's page. Overall it's a cheap option even considering it's coming from UK. I'll call them tonight to validate they are common anode. I'll keep the thread posted.

ya np. i was going to buy it and still might. if you do get it let me no how to hook it up to rgb. i have corsair ecosystem so no rgb only argb but there is a convertor to go rgb so ill have to get that costly but only option.

 

other option is to go aqua computer as they support corsair fans and have both rgb and argb.

They have confirmed the switches are common cathode. So no go.

I ordered them but it's a long lead time as they come from China. I'll open a new thread with the details of the mod project.
