£600 Build, Looking for thoughts

Rupe

Hi Guys!

My brother is finally looking to upgrade his relic of an i7 920, and his GTX 760. Last night me and him had a look at PCPartPicker and this is what we came to. He initially said he didn't want to go above £600 but was fine with this £613 build. He doesn't need Storage or a PSU(Although I did advise him he might want to upgrade his 10 year PSU). Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

I did advise him he might want to upgrade his 10 year PSU

Unless that was some very expensive stuff maybe some Platinum Corsair PSU he doesn't want to replace it, he needs to replace it. That's a matter of frying his new PC or not.

Here's my changes :

- Cheaper motherboard (and it's actually better in some ways).

- Cheaper RAM and it might actually work with XMP profile in contrast with 3600MHz one.

- Cheaper GPU to make a room for a new PSU, still very good for 1080p gaming.

- mATX case to match the motherboard, and it has better airflow.

- Very good PSU.

I can't remember the exact model but it was high end at the time he went all out on the PC in general. Even had a custom loop. The psu was overkill 1000w rated. I will try and get this information from him as to the model although knowing him (Oh,and I do) he will be stubborn on the issue

I will swap out the RAM. Any RAM in particular or just not the LPX?

At the same price the XFX DD Ultra is available. Would you say this is a better buy? What's your concerns with the MSI card? https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/tt7p99/xfx-radeon-rx-5700-8-gb-dd-ultra-video-card-rx-57xl8lbd6

Yeah, if it was high-end chances are it will still do but it depends, get an exact model. Either way it might have started to show signs of aging, it ain't gonna be good forever, 10 years is a lot.

@Juular Thanks for the suggestion. I will talk to him about going for a smaller build. I have switched out the RAM on the build for the Patriot Viper 4

@SavageNeo Also thanks for the suggestion again I will talk to him about going Micro ATX and changing the case

I will try and persuade him to get a new PSU, I just sent him a message asking what model of PSU he has.

Ok not as high end as I expected the Antec Truepower Quattro 1000w. I guess the strong recommendation would be to get a new one?

I'd cautiously say that it's roughly as good as 50$ PSUs these days (disregarding 1000W power rating) which you don't want to power this GPU with. But i'd wait @LienusLateTips @LukeSavenije word on this.

Well that doesn't seem to bad. Calling in the Big Cheeses in the PSU LTT world. Nice :). Spos the question would be, can degradation in components over time cause a potential risk to computer hardware? My intuition would tell me that safety features built into the PSU would stop it working before harm came to the components

Thing is being 10+ yo design it most likely doesn't have that much of protection features as in even relatively budget modern PSU.

That's true, but still doesn't mean it's necessarily unsafe to use. That's what I'm trying to determine
