I have that problem with MQA as well. And honestly I don't even like the way it sounds. I'd rather wait for DSD which interests me more

So many snake oil products were sent ?‍♂️all he needed was the DAC and amp.

 

If he had shit power in the building, he could have run it through a UPS but otherwise the amp and DAC should have been able to isolate mains noise themselves if they were engineered correctly, no need for all the snake oil cables and power supplies.

 

The DAC is a R2R Ladder DAC which means that they believe they can beat DAC chip OEMs like AKM, TI, and ESS or save a cent, but usually ends up resulting in garbage with lots of noise, distortion, and other weird oddities. The spec for the DAC is 0.008% THD+N which equates to ~81dB, so the DAC doesn’t even meet CD spec of 96dB... Not sure where they got their stated 130.5dB of dynamic range as it doesn’t correlate to any of their other specs. If it is true though, then yes... it’s a chart topping DAC so long as they haven’t stuffed up the fundamentals. I’m sceptical as hell though.

 

Going by specs, the amplifier looks okay delivering tons of power which is usually the single most important metric for an amp given that Planar Magnetic headphones are notoriously difficult to drive.

 

The Drop THX 789 and a Topping D50 would probably outperform for less than $1000 or even an RME ADI-2 all in one for example.

 

On the positive side, the headphones are very, very good. Just a shame they paired them with a crap chain.

Sounds like audiophoolery. 

Since they sent the stuff, why don't you swap out the non-sense and ABX test with an O2 DAC the amplifier and headphones?

Don't kid yourself. The O2 can't even output a single watt. You would seriously be under powering The 1266

That's why I wrote "the amplifier and headphones". If I understand correctly this ...thing... has an amplifier separate from the DAC unit. There is a version of the O2 DAC with RCA output.

You're talking about the Grace SDAC. It would sound less detailed overall (mainly in the highs). For the majority of people having a high-end DAC isn't necessary, but when you spend thousands of dollars on your headphones you would want them to sound the best it can because otherwise it greatly affects the sound in a substantial way.

The Grade SDAC is based off the ODAC design.

I was expecting more analysis regarding the sound signature of the headphones as oppose to just watching Linus stare blankly into space whilst wearing a shelf on his head...

It comes down to how it converts digital-to-analog. R2R dacs convert each individual bit in the signal, whereas a delta-sigma dac converts only 1 bit and uses quantization signal processing to basically over-samples the rest of the bits. This allows the R2R conversion to be more accurate, and avoid a substantial amount of quantization noise which affects the high frequencies.

I wasn’t a fan enough to spend that kind of cash on any in the lineup. I’m happy with my Utopia and LCD-4s.

If he had shit power in the building, he could have run it through a UPS but otherwise the amp and DAC should have been able to isolate mains noise themselves if they were engineered correctly, no need for all the snake oil cables and power supplies.

 

The DAC is a R2R Ladder DAC which means that they believe they can beat DAC chip OEMs like AKM, TI, and ESS or save a cent, but usually ends up resulting in garbage with lots of noise, distortion, and other weird oddities. The spec for the DAC is 0.008% THD+N which equates to ~81dB, so the DAC doesn’t even meet CD spec of 96dB... Not sure where they got their stated 130.5dB of dynamic range as it doesn’t correlate to any of their other specs. If it is true though, then yes... it’s a chart topping DAC so long as they haven’t stuffed up the fundamentals. I’m sceptical as hell though.

 

Going by specs, the amplifier looks okay delivering tons of power which is usually the single most important metric for an amp given that Planar Magnetic headphones are notoriously difficult to drive.

 

The Drop THX 789 and a Topping D50 would probably outperform for less than $1000 or even an RME ADI-2 all in one for example.

 

On the positive side, the headphones are very, very good. Just a shame they paired them with a crap chain.

Also don't forget the AMP doesn't even have balanced inputs, but the output is balanced, go figure.

Mini DSP SHD Studio -> 2x Mola Mola Tambaqui DAC's (fed by AES/EBU, one feeds the left sub and main, the other feeds the right side) -> 2x Neumann KH420 + 2x Neumann KH870

 

(Having a totally seperate DAC for each channel is game changing for sound quality)

At what point in high end audio does price to overall fidelity fall flat on its face, does it? I can understand this setup if you're a working professional and picking up every little detail is paramount. How about the individual that doesn't have $35,000 to burn, which is the vast majority of us?

I am no expert but IMO the price range would be around 700 USD for a pair of headphones + 300 for AMP/DAC. If we consider a cheap crappy headphones X as the starting point at 0% and the total sound nirvana at 100%, then buying something like Focal Elex or the equivalent will bring you to about 70-75% with a setup at about 1k USD.

 

Focal Clear or Sennheiser HD800s will bring you 75-80% but the price of the setup will probably double to about 2k USD. As you can see, the higher you go, the more expensive it gets to achieve minimal improvements.

 

Focal Utopia or Audeze LCD4 or Stax 009 will get you to (depending on the reviewer) 85-90 %but that setup is usually between 7-15k depending on the Amp/DAC .Abyss 1266 is rated often higher by many audiophiles so let's say it will bring you to 91-92%. I think a reasonable Abyss chain isn't much more expensive than those above. You certainly don't have to spend 35k USD on an Abyss chain.

 

and Orpheus will get you to 93-95% but here you can touch yourself watching how the headphones roll out from the marble case in front of you :D

 

It's hard to judge because honestly, what stops you from using amazing headphones with an amp that costs $100 (provided it can power them)? Nothing. 

 

Nothing also stops you from getting a Chord Dave and slapping a $100 headphones to it. 

 

In my examples I try to give more "balanced" setups price-wise. Dunno if resident audiophiles here will agree ?

As is the case usually. You can put as much money as you want into a hobby, but there reaches a point where cost rises exponentially with marginal gains in performance. Thanks for the info! ?
