Brother of drug lord Pablo Escobar launches a $349 foldable smartphone

piemadd

I bet they just bought the FlexPai stock, rebranded it, and will sell it at a "loss", in a way to launder drug money.

Pretty smart. At least this way it's somewhat legitimized.

Their marketing is...interesting to say the least. Nothing like some see through bras to say "I'm a serious business."

Ignoring the scam vs not debate and just focusing on the device, I see a few good and bad things.  The good is obviously the price, this is better than a lot of normal phones, never mind the folding ones that always seem to be $1k - $2k.  If this does turn out to be a real product, it's going to be a much appreciated and powerful dagger through the heart of any support for these other insanely priced devices.  However, one obvious downside is it appears that the fold has such a huge radius that it's effectively useless.  It doesn't fold flat, just sort of into a vastly more awkward shape than a flat slab would have otherwise been even without this feature.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Don't take everything so seriously, however:

The view of bad/"cool"/nice/horrible/etc thing it's just subjective, don't try to objectify the thing to impose a certain view of things

Also by censuring certain (random) things, you are not gonna put down certain behaviours, they might be less "public" but they will still exist, always if there is request

And we are not equal, and because of that any form of discrimination will still be there, even your own existence could damaging someone else

Nope. Sorry. You are wrong. And at this point, I'm not even going to attempt to explain why.

Uhm... you know that being related to a criminal doesn't automatically make you one...?

To be clear, I know nothing about this guy - but him being brothers with Pablo tells me nothing about his trustworthiness.

Yeah but his name is Roberto, but the company is apparently called "Pablo phone inc."?

So it's not like he is trying to distance himself from the activities of his late brother.

This indeed feels like a scam, trying to capitalize off of some sort of "cool gangsta image" with the bikini babes in a mansion showing off the phone.. I bet once the orders are in, the company will declare bankruptcy, and say goodbye to your pre-order money.

That's completely irrelevant, making something socially and legally unacceptable undeniably lowers its occurrence. You cannot argue with a straight face that making, for example, child porn legal wouldn't lead to an increase in the creation and consumption of child porn which would inevitably lead to more child abuse even just in the creation process. Censoring, banning and deplatforming works, to the point where people who are censored or deplatformed incessantly protest. Whether a given censoring or deplatforming action is acceptable within the realm of human rights depends on the specific instance, but you cannot argue that it doesn't work.

That's a load of bullshit my dude, just because you can't feasibly eradicate all forms of discrimination doesn't mean you shouldn't fight it to the best of your ability, or that your efforts have no tangible positive effect.

The drug lord's brother has been able to price the phone so low by cutting out the middlemen like networks and retailers. He is also preparing to file a $30 billion class-action lawsuit against Apple for scamming people and wants the company to "give some of their illegal profits back to the people".

Cutting out the networks sounds like it would save a lot of money.  One of the most expensive parts of the business is making deals with various local networks, so that the phone part of the phone actually works.  Enjoy using a phone that only works in wifi.

As already sayed the point of view of bad/nice is purely subjective (in certain context);

However you're right making something socially unacceptable is a good way to reduce certain behaviours.

I would like to argue more, but dunno if it's the right place to do so..

I don't recall saying the contrary, unless you're honestly about to argue that discrimination is good "from your point of view", in which case you'd be in direct breach of the CS.

Cs?

However rereading my main comment, it's kinda misleading;

Anyway that comment was morelike an attack aganist the point of view of the guy that I replied, even if for example drawers in an anime studio are usually underpayed I couldn't say that kizumonogatari (actually I don't know if the workers are underpayed or not, just taking it as example) it's a bad work just because of that;

And to not try to objectify his own opinions

Yeah, we could argue all day that "from specific points of view, entirely eradicating the human race and making Bob the lord of the flies is good"... or even worse scenarios... I don't think that's a good argument for why the women in the advertising campaign to this phone, are not being mistreated (socially/economically/visually, or IRL if things are even worse).

Personal note before we begin: HAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHA llmaooooooooooooo

ok now into the news

I think it is nice for someone to take on these brands.

I'm actually looking for a new phone, so im definitely going to buy this lmao. If you are wondering, "Why would you trust someone like this with making a phone?"

Es bueno senor. I feel like if this goes anywhere, the money will either be donated to charity or into development of the phone.

OOOOOOO. Very nice, more than decent, exceptional! Now lets look at the specs:

OwO thats pretty nice. Kind of sad there is no Android 10, but 9 is fine and i'd even be happy with an update down the line.

Overall, I like this phone, and I'm definitely going to buy one. Wouldn't be surprised if Linus has already ordered one lol.

Article: https://www.neowin.net/news/brother-of-drug-lord-pablo-escobar-launches-a-349-foldable-smartphone/

Where to purchase the phone lol: https://www.escobarinc.com/product/fold1/

This actually makes sense

i heard rumours on another blog that is beeing developed already its a SmartPhone foldable its based on a new type aluminum foil paper

Not shure if its true but they branded it  "Escobar S1 plus coca edition"  there is rumours around about the full devices specs.. as they seem to be using a secret recipe.

I don't think this will hold up in court. You can't sue a company for being successful. I think you can only sue them if they use illegal methods to be successful.
