Christmas Upgrade for Son

alembic772

My son currently has a custom built i5-6600K overclocked to 4.8GHz, 16GB RAM, RX480, 256GB SSD, 2TB HDD.

He wants to upgrade to get more frames, but I don't have the $$$ to replace everything.

So am I better off swapping to I7-7700K or replacing RX480 with a 5700XT or 2070?

Depends on the game... but I'm against spending more on this platform. 4c8t isnt that much gain but these CPUs are quite expensive for what they are.

I second this. It's probably the best upgrade path overall. Gives the option for better Ryzen chips down the line, and a better GPU

Gaming Build:

CPU: Ryzen 7 3800x   |  GPU: Asus ROG STRIX 2080 SUPER Advanced (2115Mhz Core | 9251Mhz Memory) |  Motherboard: Asus X570 TUF GAMING-PLUS  |  RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws DDR4 3600MHz 16GB  |  PSU: Corsair RM850x  |  Storage: 1TB ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro, 250GB Samsung 840 Evo, 500GB Samsung 840 Evo  |  Cooler: Corsair H115i Pro XT  |  Case: Lian Li PC-O11

Peripherals:

Monitor: LG 34GK950F  |  Sound: Sennheiser HD 598  |  Mic: Blue Yeti  |  Keyboard: Corsair K95 RGB Platinum  |  Mouse: Logitech G502

Laptop:

Asus ROG Zephryus G15

Ryzen 7 4800HS, GTX1660Ti, 16GB DDR4 3200Mhz, 512GB nVME, 144hz

Intel processors for that generation are painfully overpriced, unless you can find a 6700k/7700k on Facebook market or letgo for sub $200 it's not worth it.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

You can get a 3600 + Mobo + 1660 for ~$460 USD, where a 5700xt will cost you $400-450. So for $10-50 more you can get an entirely new platform with better future upgradability.

The issue is, I don't have the $$$ right now to do new MB, new CPU, new RAM, and new GPU....

CPU+MOBO+RAM look ok for now, go for a rx5700 and upgrade the rest of the platform next Christmas

Is a 3600 really going to give that much better performance?

What B450 Micro ATX motherboard is recommended?

msi -a pro/tomahawk max. but I'd still say you should upgrade the gpu first, the cpu looks solid for now

5700 XT Nitro + ?

Or 2060 Super?

what's your budget? the 5700xt definitely beats the 2060 super.

The RX 480 is an easy replace. The jump from that to say an RX 5700 XT is the jump from an aging budget 1080p gaming card to a brand new mid/high end 1080/1440P unit.

This will be night and day in gaming.
