Please suggest a decent budget wifi card for a windows 10 desktop connected via ether net cable to the router which is 5 feet away.

Intrafinesse

A few years ago a windows update temporarily prevent the direct plug in cable form working so I used an old wireless USB wifi adapter.

I don't think I have it anymore and am thinking if its cheap i wouldn't mind getting another, just in case.

Anything to avoid?

Not that I know of.  You’re going 5 feet over open air.  You don’t need my special features.  Lowball it.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

Agreed, if its just an emergency backup for fixing any potential problems, no need to worry about it being fast.

Although generally I find you need to go online to install the WiFi drivers in the first place, so I'm not sure how helpful this is.  Losing wired ethernet should be far more rare than losing WiFi support.

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)
Upgrading Laptop/Desktop CNVIo WiFi 5 cards to PCIe WiFi6e/7
