Ryzen 3900x Cooler questions

yohanio

I just built a new PC and it seems that I get around 50-55 degrees when idling with the stock cooler. Is that around a normal temperature? It even reached 90 degrees when playing HOTS.

I had to remove the cooler once when I was building so I think the thermal paste might need to be changed.

Also, I have an old Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO that I never opened. Is it compatible with the 3900x? Would that be better than the Wraith Prism?

For stock cooler, yes, pretty much. CM H212 EVO should be better but it may lack AM4 mounting kit if it was manufactured prior 2016, check on the box. Either way if it's just for gaming you'll be good on both, there's nothing to worry about but possibly some loss of performance due to throttling, for smth more CPU-heavy you'll need more sophisticated cooler.

If you want better temps, better get something beefy.  The 212 won't change much

It's a Ryzen stock cooler, not an Intel one; the Hyper 212 EVO won't do much at all

It maybe wouldn't do much but it's a bit better anyway.

So changing the thermal paste won't really change anything?

Firstly, are you running the latest AGESA 1.0.0.4 BIOS? I did see a drop in temps going from the earlier BIOS to the latest. Also, unless you buy a biga$$ cooler like the BE Quiet! Dark Rock 4, or one of the Noctua models. I have a 3900X + X570 Aorus Xtreme, with the latest Windows version (1909), BIOS and Ryzen Master (2.1.0.1424) and with aircon set at 24C, my CPU is idling around 38C. I'm cooling it with a Thermaltake Water 3.0 360 AIO, I've added 3x 120mm fans to it for push/pull. You can just see the 3x RGB fans that came with the AIO on top...

Hey bro, Sick build there.  Show us more with the CPU cooling!  U have 3 or 6 fans for the 360 radiator?

It might help a bit but only if the original paste application wasn't very good. You'll get a bigger improvement from using the Hyper 212 Evo. If you already have it, try it out first. You can always replace it later if you're not satisfied with the results.

Moved to Air Cooling.
