Is there a reason my post count doesn't go up?

Mark Kaine

I just thought it's weird,  I could swear I already had 640 yesterday.

Am I posting too much?  I'm really trying to mostly do helpful posts, lol, not sure what's wrong...

Is it a bug?

If not, why even have a counter at all?

I have OCD and this is extremely irritating.

Thank you.

(I also expect my post count to magically go up now,  but it really is stuck since yesterday...)

^Edit: welp, it didn't go up...

Certain sub forums (including Off Topic, Test posts and I believe Forum Information) do not count up your post count.

This is done because @Levent mentions, no shitposting! But also because this is a tech forum, so your post count should reflect the amount of tech related posts you have made (and Off Topic inherently is not tech related and forum info is kind of meta).

Hmm, that would maybe explain it,  but I'm pretty sure I made some completely normal posts in trouble shooting for example and even helped some people and it still didn't go up.

So it maybe is a bug after all?

My post count is still going up and I have never had an issue with the count system here (except for one time years ago).

Are you sure you just didn't notice it going up...? It's also very possible you posted something on a thread that has since been deleted..

You're posting about your postcount, it's important to you and it shouldn't be.

Yeah,  because I noticed it today when I posted something in "Graphics cards"... it just didn't go up. I've also already noticed it yesterday but didn't really think much of it...

So you had the same issue..  how was it fixed?

You have 678 posts: https://linustechtips.com/main/profile/675016-mark-kaine/content/page/28/?type=forums_topic_post

39 in off topic

3 in Bugs and issues

So that should give a post count of 636 posts.

But it's very likely there might be some thread hidden (not deleted, hidden) where you might have a couple posts that explains the different (or maybe bugs and issues does count up your posts??) EDIT: nope, bugs and issues (this sub forum) doesn't count up your post amount.

Either you miscounted, or a thread has been removed where you had posted in, causing the difference in what you think your post count should be and what it is.

Ok,  hmm thanks for the answer.

Regardless of if I miscounted or not that doesn't really add up lol,  but your explanation still makes sense I guess,  and I also think it's obvious that this can be very confusing nonetheless.

I also do not see this anywhere that I have 678 posts,  which if I did would have probably helped to avoid at least some of the confusion.

This is all I see in your link lol.

we already have issues with disproportionate perceived authority just because of that number under the profile picture

No you shouldn't and I don't,  but it does help to assert sometimes how actually useful some information that's been posted is...  And I agree with your last point, but that's just human nature... Big numbers = good (which can be sometimes misleading of course...)

I actually wouldn't mind not having this post count thing (for all members of course)  but I'm not sure that would actually work since it would most likely be substituted with something else and the same "issue" would persist or another one created.

But if you read my OP again,  this isn't really *my* issue,  my issue is the discrepancies it creates... (if there would be a post count only you can see for example, that would help... but I don't see that anywhere)

I think that posts in off topic etc don't count is actually a good idea,  but I'm currently not convinced it's working as intended (I'll keep an eye on that)

As others have mentioned posts in off topic, forum information, test posts, as well as status updates do not count towards your post count.

You were at 640 posts and then just now when you posted a reply in the troubleshooting forum it has gone up to 641. Appears to be counting correctly.

Deleted posts still count towards post count.

If you post in a subforum that counts posts it will cont as a post even if that thread is later moved to a subforum which doesn't count posts (eg. You post in a general discussion thread then the thread gets moved to off topic). Any posts made after it is moved to a subforum which does not count posts will not count.

Same goes the other way, it won't count a post made in off topic even if that is later moved to a board that does count.

It counts by when it was posted.

Yes, it does now. :)

I might have been really confused or whatever but I really thought it stopped counting for some reason...

And I understood that some posts don't count since I learned about it,  but thanks for the clarification!

I'm still not sure where @minibois saw my "true" post count haha,  might be a thing cause I'm on mobile?

You can view your post activity on your profile. You can count how many posts show up. It displays 25 posts per page so with 28 pages means up to 700 posts (the last page might not be a full 25 posts so you'll need to count how many posts on the last page. 675+however many on the last page).
