The operation is (SUPER) successful - overclockers create 2080 Ti SUPER

Brazilian overclocking group Teclab has taken the VRAM chips off two 2080 SUPER and slapped them onto a Galax HoF 2080 Ti, thereby increasing its memory bandwdith.

The overclockers team at TecLAB includes some legendary personalities such as Ronaldo Buassali from Brazil who also head's GALAX's operations in Latin America. The overclockers team had one simple task, take one NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti and turn it into an RTX 2080 TI SUPER by putting faster GDDR6 memory. This was decided because one of the key changes that many SUPER RTX & SUPER GTX cards made was to replace their memory with faster GDDR6 dies. Theoretically, NVIDIA would also most likely feature faster GDDR6 memory dies on the RTX 2080 Ti SUPER variant since the non-SUPER variant comes with 14 Gbps dies while the RTX 2080 SUPER now carries 15.5 Gbps dies.

 

 

There are other changes to be expected on the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti SUPER but those are all rumor for now as is the card itself. I am hopeful that NVIDIA would release the RTX 2080 Ti SUPER in early 2020 but till then, we have to stick with our good friend, the RTX 2080 Ti. Nevertheless, the TecLAB team figured out to turn the RTX 2080 Ti into a RTX 2080 Ti SUPER, they had to use faster memory dies and since they can't just go ask Micron, Samsung or SK Hynix for 16 Gbps dies, they took out 2 GALAX GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER graphics cards (one EX OC and one WTF variant), pre-heat the dies so they can come off of their BGA packages one by one and then remove them from the PCB.

 

Two NVIDIA RTX 2080 SUPER graphics cards were killed off during this procedure since the RTX 2080 series cards feature 8 memory dies and a total of 11 are needed for the RTX 2080 Ti SUPER. That's a total of $2000 US just for the two RTX 2080 SUPER cards from GALAX. These HC16 dies were then reballed by removing all the impure alloy, cleaning them up and reballing them on the RTX 2080 Ti HOF PCB. Do note that this process is super risky & should be done by a hardware specialist. The memory dies from the RTX 2080 Ti were also removed to make room for the new 16 Gbps dies. After the process is complete, each die is then soldered on to the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti PCB, replacing its older 14 Gbps dies with the faster 16 Gbps dies.

Thoughts: If you can swap GDDR6 dies from one card to another, I wonder can you put memory dies from other models such as a RTX Titan or even HBM2? Regardless once the Ti super drops there better be a good discount for the non super models.

If the protocol is the same e.g. same standard, but different speed then this isn't too bad. Changing to a different technology is out.

have changed 2Gbit dies to 8Gbit dies on an HD 7870 before, but off course you have to stay with the same technology.

HBM2 unfortunately cannot be transferred between different GPUs (pretty sure anyway), as its a die that is mounted on the substrate of the GPU itself. 

As such, trying to remove it would destroy the GPU core, the HBM or both.

Either way, this is kind of cool? I wonder if Louis Rossman would be able to replicate the results. That'd be kind awesome to see a live demo of.

Uuuhh, this is actually not that hard to do.

 

I myself have removed the memories from my 760gtx when i replaced it years ago and re-soldered it back on just for the heck of it to see what's underneath. Anyone can do it if they funnel the hot air into a tighter point with their heat gun.

 

They honestly did a piss poor job if you ask me. Killing 2 cards is just wrong when they had all those tools around while i had a heat gun with a metal funnel for control and a set of pliers.

It's not killing the cards in so much as screwing up the repairs. It's killing the cards by sacrificing and pulling their vram chips. They apparently were not able to directly buy the faster gddr6 chips so they had to pull vram chips off of two other cards (which had only 8 chips each) to replace all 11 of the chips from the 2080ti.

Kinda. This doesn't have the additional cuda cores etc that the Super card is rumored to have, so it's like halfway between the 2080Ti and a 2080Ti Super. Congrats guys. You just gave Nvidia another idea for an even more fragmented flagship segment.

Oh I'm not holding my breath. I gave up on AMD's glue-sniffing GPU division a long time ago.

Sure it does. Graphics cards are on a 2 year release cycle. So, if you hold off on the Ti variant, you have something to release in the gap year.

The problem is when a new generation of GPUs comes out and Nvidia holds off on the Ti version people who want the best will be forced to wait 6 month to a year for the XX80Ti. I think Nvidia should keep doing what they are doing now and release the the Ti version of the XX80 at the same time as the non Ti version and release SUPER version of the GPUs in the gap year.

Not really. Those people will just buy the top tier card at release, and then upgrade later. If you're willing to spend $1,200+ on a GPU, it's not really that hard to pony up the money again within a year, which is what the enthusiast is more likely to do. People that buy flagship Ti cards are rarely that concerned with cost.

AMD kind of did that already, Nvidia won't drop their price but release more confusing SKUs and flood the market to combat AMD like they did recently. They are too greedy to drop their prices, instead flood the market with more confusing SKUs without dropping the original SKUs prices.

This is the first time NVIDIA released something with this bad of a pricing. Turing is built technically on a 16nm process. I'm sure when NVIDIA makes a 7nm chip, things will look much better.

 

And AMD/ATI I would argue has done similar things, but not on that bad of a level. It's what I dubbed "first to next gen tax." And I'd argue AMD's key strength is they have access to a 7nm fab. But that's it.

so im guessing that a higher lithography usually means a higher manufacturing cost

Threatening the low performance end of the market is not a threat.

 

Either threaten on all fronts, or go home. All AMD has done is make themselves look like the "cheap Chinese ripoff" brand. I know that's inaccurate to say from a technical standpoint, but from a purely marketing psychology standpoint, that's what they look like in the GPU market.

 

They're the "cheap, crappy" brand you buy if you can't afford Nvidia, OR they're the brand of illogical fanboys.

 

I'm saying this as someone who WANTS to have a reason to buy AMD graphics cards. But to day, they've offered nothing that is worthwhile to buy and replace my 1080ti. At least as far as I can see.

 

To shed some light: I really don't like Nvidia. I actually hate them, because I was an early adopter of the GTX 970. I don't trust them, I don't trust their marketing AT. ALL. I even received a $30 check in the mail for having been duped by their deceptive marketing as a result of the class action over that particular SKU.

 

But still, I bought Nvidia when I upgraded, because I wanted the best performance I could get, and AMD had absolutely nothing that even remotely compared with the 1080ti.

 

Full disclosure: Really I bought a 1080, and EVGA has this wonderful program where if a new model launches within a certain timeframe of your purchase, you can RMA the device you have (free shipping too IIRC), pay the difference, and get the newer model. I bought a 1080, and ended up with a 1080ti FE that has been an absolute powerhouse of a card on water cooling. I get 2.0Ghz without going above 45C, regardless of what time of year it is.
