3700x vs 3800x vs i7-9700k with a gtx 1080 gaming performance difference?

hello all, i had a question and wanted your guys input. 

 

would is matter which cpu i go with (3700x,3800x,9700k) if i have a gtx 1080 in my rig? all the cpu performance charts are with a 2080ti which is way more powerful than my 1080 so i assume my 1080 would be the bottleneck and not any of those three cpus right? i have a 2k monitor 144hz and like to play at 2k quality not 1080p which i assume makes the 1080 bottleneck even more obvious. and whatever setting gets me at least 60-90 fps.

 

i currently have i7-4770k (4th gen intel with 4 cores and 8 threads and it's holding my 1080 way too much. cpu is at 100% all the time when i play and i get choppy gaming experience even tho my 1080 is only working at 50-60%)  if the performance isn't that different i'd rather go with amd's 3700 or 3800 rather than intel.

At 1440p more often than not, the GPU is always the bottleneck so I would think that your pretty safe to go with the 3700x.  Between the 3700x and the 3800x, unless you can get a sweet deal on the 3800x, go with the 3700x.  There generally is only like a 2-3 fps different in game performance between the two processors.

Get the R5 3600 if all you is game, it games the same as the R7 3700X but it's cheaper :3

 

It also is going to be a great upgrade from an i7 4770K

i see well i'm glad because i really wanted to go with an amd 3rd gen seems it's a way better value.

i do quite a bit when i play on my second monitor. i don't stream but i have a lot of things open and a decent amount of chrome pages. i'm a studying software development and i hear that compiling codes can be heavy so i'd rather stick with an 3700x or 3800x just depends if i can find a good deal on the 3800x. also better for future proofing i'm assuming

Think any cpu will easily handle that card and any normal res. 

 

I had a 1080 in both rigs and it was night and day at both 1080p and 1440p.

for that use the 3700 does make more sense then the 3600, and also the 9700k.  The 9700k is for overclocking and pushing for absolute maximum FPS, and even more so absolute best (even better then 9900k most of time) minimum frame-rates, as in 1% and .1% lows in competitive titles at 1080p with absolutely no excess programs running the backround, but even in that ideal case your differences in FPS minimums won't be bad with any of these if even noticable at all.  This changes though with multi-tasking+gaming, in that situation the threadcount of the 3700x will likely have better minimums, stutter less, since that CPU is better at focusing on multiple tasks, rather then just running one, core speed dependant task (purely games) at fastest frames possible.

yeah GPU will be the bottleneck so yeah a 3700X is more than enough.

I'm in a similar boat. Assuming I already have a Motherboard for each (Aorus Master z390, Strix E 570):

 

9700k - $299

3800x - $329

 

Idk what to get!

I'd get a good AM4 board and a Ryzen 3700X (or even a 3600), with a possibility to upgrade to Zen2+ when they'll show up.

LGA1151-2 (9700K) is a dead-end. It's fast enough, but this platform is finished.

You're right, the GTX 1080 will hold you back at 2K resolution.

i already bought a 3800x and a x570 motherboard yesterday on black Friday. i got a good deal on the 3800x and paid the same price as the 3700x before the black Friday discounts. super excited for it to arrive!
