Upgrading from stock cooler

Hi,

 

I was thinking of buying a CPU cooler for Ryzen 3600. My stock cooler is working exceptionally (to my surprise as well), but however, it couldn't keep the CPU cool for more workstation related task, and it ended up thermal throttling.

 

So, I'm looking to upgrade my CPU cooler, but here's the catch: My case only support 160mm cooler, and my budget is about US$40 (around RM170).

 

I don't mind noise and the looks, but I would prefer it to be black.

 

So far, at my local store at least, I narrow down to these few options:

- Cooler Master Hyper 212 LED Turbo White Edition (Too bad it's white in colour)

* It's a pity that Hyper 212 LED Turbo couldn't fit into my case (the height is 163mm)

- Cooler Master Hyper 212 RGB Black Edition (over my budget a bit, but it's my best choice so far)

- Cooler Master MasterAir MA410P (I like this as you can install a second fan if you want)

- ID Cooling SE-214L-SNOW (Too bad it's white in colour)

- ThermalTake UX200 ARGB

- ThermalTake Riing Silent

- Be Quiet Pure Rock

- Be Quiet Pure Rock Slim

 

So, which is the best, or do you have any better cooling option to suggest? I'm not into water cooling or AIO at the moment, but maybe going for custom cooling in the distant future (mainly budget).

I want to throw in the beQuiet! Shadow Rock 2. 

It has 180W Tdp and is really Quiet. I use it on my Ryzen 7 1700 with an oc to 3.675 GHz and it doesntabove 60°C

Interesting that there is thermal throttling on the stock cooler.  The 3600x comes with a wraith cooler which seems like it would solve all your problems.  That ship has sailed though.  This black small cheap cooler thing came up in another thread.  That person wound up choosing an “esports” cooler.

Shadow Rock is quite expensive for me, though, but I know they are quite good.

Normally, the wraith stealth, which comes with the r5 3600 should be sufficient to ceep ist cool. Maybe you dont have enough airflownin your case, or you dont have enough mounting pressure.

You won’t need very much cooler.  The 3600 stock cooler isn’t very good, and you only need a bit more cooling.

 

UPDATE the 3600 cooler may be better than I thought.  There is a claim that it is a wraith stealth.  Is it?

3600x not 3600.  It’s the only real difference between the two I read here somewhere. Or maybe I’m thinking wrong.

 

you may be correct.  Paste could also be a thing.  I’m a fan of the diamond pastes myself.  This problem might be solved with a remounting rather than a new cooler.  Much cheaper.

You should get the ryzen 5 3600x because it comes with good enough cooler (near 212 evo -25bucks). The ryzen 5 3600 comes with wraith steralth, which is not that good for workloads, bu itt will keep it cool when gaming. And the ryzen 5 3600x has 4-10% better performance

Because I live in tropical climate, so my environment temperature is high (36c at day time). I actually run SQL database which put my CPU constantly running at close to 100%, so it throttles down significantly (I can still run at 3.4GHz at 86c after 1 hour of operation, though)

third gen ryzen throttles when more than 95c not 86c like second gen (idk if im right here, but i read this somewhere

I'm running 6 case fans, so air flow is good (a little positive pressure). Heat sink mounting is good as far as I can tell, because the temperature when playing games doesn't hit 75c (sometimes it stays constant at 70c while running at 3.8GHz) with utilization of 40% max. The CPU can cools immediately (temperature drop almost 10c in 2 seconds after operation).

He had the tropical climate issue too.

what paste are you using?

Use ryzen master and manually (very easy only touch mhz, dont need to touch momery and voltages) clock your cpu to 4.2ghz.

This is something I would personally leave up. The whole throttle on 95c always seemed too hot to me.

You can also try to lower your voltage slowly. Maybe you have a good Chip and lower voltwge means lower temps

Might I suggest diamond paste then?  It’s unreasonably expensive for paste, but it’s cheaper than a new cooler and you don’t need a lot more cooling to hit your target. It bought me about 15f. I’m not sure of the conversion but it should be around or over 10c  Might be enough, might not.

I tried lower the voltage, but I could rarely achieve 4.2 GHz (about 4.05GHz full speed, but I forgotten how much I have lowered), the temperature still goes up to 80c and my CPU begins to throttle. Anyway, I'm not very good at adjusting the voltage, so I put them auto all the way.

So prescriptions seem to be:

 

1: try a mild under volt and see if you get anywhere.

cost $0, effectiveness ?

 

2: higher quality paste

pros: cheaper than a cooler

cons may not be enough gain

 

3: a new cooler.

pros: it will almost certainly work

cons: costs $

Hmm... I see. I'm thinking of changing thermal paste into liquid metal. Do you think it might help? When I (sort of) borrow thermal sensor from my friend and stuff it at the heat sink, the temperature reported is close to 76c. I don't think thermal paste is the issue, but I might be wrong.
