Ethernet disconnecting

Gapehorn

Hellooo

I've been getting this problem where my ethernet connection is being unreliable and just cuts out and it just says that the network cable is unplugged. Now this has been happening for a few days and is house wide. Multiple computers on ethernet are experiencing this problem. All of them also show that the network cable is unplugged even though it is clearly plugged in.The lights on the motherboard's ethernet connector dont light up. It's not a cable issue as I've bought new cables to try on them to avail. However, my wifi seems to be completely unaffected by this which i thought was weird. I'm a noob when it comes to this topic so I was hoping someone can enlighten me on what is actually going on and how I can resolve this issue? Thank you! have a nice day ?

Check your router/switch where all of the devices are being plugged into, ethernet cables aren't usually ever the problem especially if its the whole house. Is the house wired up and you just connect directly to the wall? or do you just have a bunch of cables just everywhere?

Are the lights on the router/switch all lit up for every connected device where the ethernet is plugged in for each device?

yup. theres a green light and a blinking orange light. is there any chance this may be an isp problem?

If you can rule out the cabling and multiple PCs lose connection at the same time I'd say the router is most likely the issue. If possible, I would also have a look at the router's logs, if it has any. E.g. my router has an event log where it shows when devices connect and disconnect. If you can see entries where all computers disconnect at the same time that would suggest that the router's LAN ports have an issue.

If its an ISP issue, your computers should report "no internet connection". But from the way you described it, they detect a "disconnected cable", which suggests that either the cable was unplugged or the port(s) the cable is plugged into is having an issue.

To add to what he said, if it was an ISP issue your WiFi wouldn't work either. It seems as though your router thinks everything is connected. you may have to look into diagnostics for the cabling in your walls.

That depends on your router. I can connect to mine by going to its IP address with a browser (e.g. Firefox) and signing in. Then I have to go to System > Event Logs. Obviously you'd need to know your router's IP and credentials.

follow these steps

1. Press Window+R

2. type CMD and press enter

3. type ipconfig and press enter

4. around the bottom it will say default gateway there will be a MAC address and an IP address

5. Type the IP address into your browser

6. by default the username and password are both admin

6a. if you are using a rented router from your ISP then the steps will be a little different

No, definitely not. Each machine must have it's own unique address within the same network. But if you go to network settings, the "default router" IP you see should be the IP address of your router.
