Need help deciding whether to get a GTX 1070 vs RX580

Xiee

So I have two friends who are selling their video cards. One of them has a GTX 1070 (Zotac) and the other a RX580 8GB (Sapphire Pulse).

I know these two video cards have their pros and cons, but I'm undecided. I just mostly game on 1080p on an old 24 inch Dell 60hz monitor. I plan to buy a 27 inch 1440p monitor soon (around spring 2020). I do mostly gaming and do a little video rendering on Sony Vegas from time to time.

I currently have a GTX 1060 6GB (Palit Super Jetstream).

What do you guys think? Thanks in advance!

Why not get something faster if you can afford it? Especially since OP will be getting a 1440p monitor and the 1070 will be better suited to that.

You already have a 1060

The 580 would be no upgrade, they're so similar in performance it would be redundant

Then the 1070 is also fairly close. It would be an upgrade, but not much of one.

Just save your money

The 1070 is about 50% more performance give or take than the 580 or 1060. At least from the benchmarks I've seen

150 USD for the 580.
190 USD for the 1070.

I might be able to haggle the price a bit lower since these are two of my close friends. Lol.

Neither, ~25% performance increase for the cost is way too little, unless you can sell the 1060 and get the 1070 within less than $50 from the sell price it isn't really worth the trouble.

The 580 is just a sidegrade so that's also not worth.

150 for a 580 is overpriced. They are readily available on Ebay for 120 shipped or less. A brand new one is 170 with a free game.

The 1070 is about market average

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I'm leaning more towards the 1070 now. I still might be able to get it at a lower price if I try to haggle with my friend.

1070 is not enough for 1440p anymore, need 1080 at least.

Really depends on the games and settings.. (seems obvious but many people don't think about only Ultra and AAA releases)

Many HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS of games run very well on 2560x1440p on a GTX1070.

You can't make this statement a global one...

What I'd say is that you ARE seeing games at JUST 1080p Max settings go sub80fps on a GTX1070 in AAA games,..
So 1440p in AAA games you are mostly always going to lower settings going forward chasing 60fps at 1440p.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Uhm...no?

I get 70-100fps in the current AAA titles at high/ultra settings.

well thats true. im the type who never plays below max setting (excluding AA which i hate). quite a few 2019 titles are lagging for me, and looking at benchmark 1080 is the way to go.
