Server RAM Upgrade

Scarous

I recently purchased a Dell PowerEdge T40 to attempt to set up some file storage, run a few game servers (Minecraft, Terraria, etc). It has a  Xeon E-2224G, 8GB RAM, 480gb SSD (planning on adding more but want to get more RAM first).

I want to upgrade the RAM.

Here is a link to the server: https://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/povw/poweredge-t40

The RAM DIMM in the machine is a single Samsung 8gb 1Rx8 PC4 2666V ED2 11.

The mobo is dual channel, 4 slots.

I purchased this DIMM https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DFDKKR2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. It does not work. It will not boot in dual channel, and will not boot if this is the only stick installed. System boots without issue with the original Samsung stick.

Did I buy the wrong kind? Maybe this seller isnt reputable and the stick is faulty? Should I return the RAM and buy the same one from Newegg? Please help! Thanks!

You bought Registered ECC memory.

You need to buy regular Unbuffered ECC memory ,,, basically if you see "Registered" or some R in the name or datasheet, that's not good.

Examples that would work:

Kingston 8GB 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR4 2400 (PC4 19200) Server Memory Model KSM24ES8/8ME - Newegg.com

Crucial 16GB DDR4 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR4 2666 (PC4 21300) Server Memory CT16G4WFD8266
