What the actual fuck? Is that seriously one of the claims?

Considering many modern phones (and even those a few years old) can decode h.264 and even 10-bit h.265 at 60 fps with very minimal heat (my SD821 device is cool to the touch under such load), I have to wonder what's going wrong here. Would it be difficult to imagine Google using an old 40 nm SoC to do the job?

Phones £900/$900. Chromecast £50/$50 or less?

With all the issues Stadia is experiencing,
Its almost like nobody playtested this thing outside what Google considers an "Ideal" setup.

You find that surprising? I'd be more surprised if it wasn't a claim.

I think that was the initial problem, everyone came all over Google about this only to find out they've been wanking to a catfish named Terry from Blackpool in a council flat.

Don't need a $900 phone to have an SoC that can decode both H.264 and H.265. The old Snapdragon 410 chip does this just fine, and was commonly found in budget devices in 2014. I don't imagine it would be difficult for someone like Google to obtain similarly capable SoCs from Mediatek and Rockchip for a few dollars each.

28nm Snapdragon 410 barely got warm under gaming load too, let alone simply decoding video in hardware.

But Google can save money and put sub par parts in. Literally... I've seen costs cut so much, a "premium" brand put fake tweeters on a box (they were a hold in the main speaker, with a plastic shroud around it). Cost cutting, vs customer perception.

And people wonder why google failed at fiber, spoiler it aint due to lack of lawyers. They just dont wanna do anything right. If it costs money to support and doesint make instant profit they dont wanna try it.

Pretty much this, really. In manufacturing, I've seen parts swapped in that was a bit cheaper (less than $1 per unit), but then several months later, failure rate in the field went well above 80% and recalls would be issued in addition to the overtime required to replace the faulty components. In one such instance, the manufacturer of the original part was moving facilities during our attempted switch, and a month delay was incurred as our customer hadn't the foresight to keep any inventory.

Perhaps engineers didn't think that the Chromecast would be used to download and decode 60 fps video for hours on end, and simply chose the cheapest part that wouldn't cook itself under projected workloads, probably not even considering gamestreaming would be in the works.

I'd wager it would probably be cheaper (in a future revision) to substitute in a lower power (equally capable) chip than it would be to use some form of heatsink.

Yeah, it's kinda stupid for Google to say that colors are what make it gender-neutral when many controllers have came in white and black. Hell, off the top of my head, I can count a transparent blue and a green PS2 controller I have, the Jungle Green N64 controller I have and all-white Wiimotes.

It's like they forgot the Wii was ever made, distributed and the most popular gaming system ever, that was adopted by a wide range of the social/people/persons.

The Switch comes with both a Red and a Blue controller. The ultimate in inclusivity.

Then again, maybe Google just harvested every the data of every woman on the planet and determined that green is objectively the most feminine color of them all. Surely they wouldn't just spew out some marketing BS about inclusivity in order to cover up the fact that Stadia is a garbage fire.

I don't understand how something like this could overheat. Its only streaming data. Not exactly an intense thing to do, my phone doesn't get hot when I stream Netflix to it.... But again this is a Google product so honestly i'd not be surprised.

Every calculation on every SoC produces heat. It's just a matter of how much and how it's dissipated. It's likely the Ultra just isn't designed to handle the heat generation that comes with that much data decode. It's also doesn't seem to have airflow at all, so it's safe heat removal ability is extremely low. A very minor overcapacity on heat generation would add up pretty quickly.

I'm glad that the controller is gender neutral. I have seen girls try to play video games on porn hub. It looks very difficult to play with genitals getting in the way.

I was so excited when they first announced stadia, thinking it would be similar to Xbox game pass in terms of being a Netflix for games with Steam's "play anywhere" functionality but rendered on their cloud. Not only was I let down by that but they can't even get the fucking service to work at all. Good job Google. Multiple months old reports of Chromecasts overheating if left in the sight of a sunny window or very hot climate. How did they not see this coming and still deny heat issues...

Watch Stadia enter the phase of obsolescence in 1-2 months where nobody is using it period while google gets into hardcore denial about it "naw! it is a very important devkit for the future of technology, and the usage habits exceed THOSE expectations".

They have done this already... where again? Oh yeah, the complete fucking joke that has absolute zero legitimate or remotely reasonable reason to be invented, let alone to exist, our favorite Google Glass.

No it doesn't it's way too slow, at best it can do 1080p 30fps x264 at some low bitrate and x265 is whole another level, remeber we want 4k 60fps capable SOC at some decent bitrate...
