The Problem with working in IT GAS....

UrbanFreestyle

I'm just popping up this post in the hope i'm not alone.

My day job is an Infrastructure Engineer for a multinational company and we get to play with some REALLY shiny stuff in the office, Big Datastores and servers and all the good things.

The issue i have is that i have GAS and end up with a lot of kit that i don't need / require but it just 'want'

As an example i've built myself a NAS and due to having lots of random hardware it is greatly over specced.

Spoiler

Asus H81-i PLUS
Intel i5 4590T
Noctua NH-L9i
2x 8gb 2133 Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3
1x 256 SSD in external USB3 enclosure (to be changed for NVME on PCIE card)
4x 3TB Wd Red HDD
3D-Printed HDD Brackets
EVGA Supernova 1000w G3
Kolink Satellite Plus Case

I also have Two x99 PCs (full setups with similar specs, Spare GPUs, 970 and 980s, another 6 3TB hdd and so much stuff i don't know what to do with.

I'm kind of tempted to sell some of it and use the money to get something more useful but i feel that i wouldn't get a decent amount for it so may as well keep it....

What do you do with spare old hardware? do you keep it or sell it  or donate it etc?

Build it up and give it away for free to people (relatives/friends,whatever) who have old stuff or have nothing.Better than getting small profit,it feels a lot lot lot better!

Thats what i have done plenty of times and i see some very positive points : 1)i can always check on my old hardware becuase...REASONS 2)My friend who got my older stuff for free they still use them since they cover them for everyday use and thats something you cant put a pricetag on.

I like your thinking. I know this sounds sad but i don't actualy have many friends so would be more a case of giving it to someone online random but then i worry they are just getting it to sell online.

I have been selling spare hardware on Facebook, Ebay and Gumtree with great success. £30 here, £50 there and it all adds up in the end!

What are the 3TB HDDs btw, spec wise? I might be interested.

I keep most of my hardware.  I love tinkering and my time is more valuable then trying to sell it (I prefer to spend my limited freetime not making money as I spend to much of my day working to make money).  If you want to sell it, sell it.  My favorite part of having all of this hardware is fixing someones something for free.

I think it is a problem with lots of people in tech.

I retired last year from being a Freelance 3D designer. Since missing a deadline could mean losing a customer I had spare everything.

Also since my business predates inexpensive high core count CPUs, I would build more computers if I needed more rendering power. I still have 2 computers I used for this lying around along with parts to build 2 more.

Most of my Stuff goes to family and friends.

I gave my Son 3 GTX 1080 tis along with motherboards, CPUs, cases and cooling solutions. I Also gave him my 1440p 144hz monitor.

I recently gave to my Daughter-in-laws friend, one of my GTX 980 tis. That leaves me with one left along with two GTX 1080s.

My biggest problem are monitors since they take up space. I have 3 not in use.

When lots of people I knew had desktops it was easy to get rid of the stuff but now most people I know have laptops and they are not interested in old tech.

The reason I didn't sell in the past was for security. I depended on my computers for my living and recovering from a theft would have been a nightmare and not worth the sale of a few old parts.

That makes sense! i tend to get parts from my work as i don't want to see them go in the bin... but then i end up keeping a hoard at home! lol

Yeah build a PC for a friend or family member so you can play together, that will bring more joy IMO
