Minecraft Server in old xeons

Histri

Hi there,

I just bought an old dual Xeon Board with Up to 12gb RAM ddr1

And after watching Linus building his Minecraftserver I thought It might bei working

Specs:

2x Intel Xeon SL7HU (1C/2Th)

ATI Rage XL onboard Video

Gigabyte 8IPXDREL Rev.1.0 (the one with only one PCI Slot)

I know its really underpowered but Itmight bei fun to try this out :)

I don't think it would work, 2 cores is so little you'd have an incredibly slow server. Maybe for a really old game.

This is pentium 4 level stuff. It's gonna really really struggle to run a current day minecraft server. You can try but from my own experience form years ago using a stronger p4 (compared to your xeon) it was really struggling with 2 people on minecraft 1.6.4.

You could probably put 6 gigs of ram  in it. You'll need an ide to sata adapter.  Definitely go ssd. It would be funny to put windows 10 on it. If it has the instruction set to boot.  It wouldn't be very powerful and a haswell i3 could top it. That board will probably not take a standard atx psu. I bet it would still be a fun build..

I'm not here to rip you apart for your part choices, however I would recommend you use paper spigot on minecraft 1.12.2 for the server, as 1.12 performs better than 1.8, and paper spigot is a high performance fork of spigot built for optimization.

That being said, go for it. You'll be surprised. I managed to get 2 players on (couldn't get anyone else besides one guy to help) with 20tps with those same settings and ~10 plugins running on a sandy bridge mobile cpu (i3-2330m)

Current PC (Second Build) : CPU: Ryzen 5 1600 (OC @3.8GHz, sometimes pushed to 4GHz) RAM: 16gb Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro DDR4-2666 (OC @2733Mhz, sometimes pushed to 2800 for testing purposes)   GPU: PowerColor Radeon RX570 8gb MOBO: ASRock B450m Pro4 SSD: Inland 120gb HDD: 1tb Seagate Barracuda PSU: Cooler Master Masterwatt 500w Lite Case: NZXT H500 OS: Arch Linux+ KDE Plasma [Desktop Environment] & Windows 10 Pro [Broken due to grub 50% of the time]

Accessories: Mouse: Alienware AW958 Elite Keyboard: Corsair K63 Wireless  Headphones: Samsung Level On Pro

Phone (waiting on arrival): Samsung Galaxy Note 9

You could really build a much better system with these prices. An i3 4130 would sweep the floor. I think everyone is close to chunking those. All's well that's still haswell...
