I find it funny how everyone is crapping on AMD for putting 'effortless 1080p gaming'

You do realise the lower the resolution the harder it is on the CPU...

4K gaming is easy on the CPU as it's the GPU that's the bottleneck, which is why in some games you'll see budget CPUs only slightly behind the overclocked 9900K

This isn't about high fps 1080p gaming necessarily, where CPU is really important. If you want say 1080p60 gaming, pretty much any >quad core CPU in the last 5 or more years will do that fine.

Main system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, Corsair Vengeance Pro 3200 3x 16GB 2R, RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut
Gaming laptop: Lenovo Legion 5, 5800H, RTX 3070, Kingston DDR4 3200C22 2x16GB 2Rx8, Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB + Crucial P1 1TB SSD, 165 Hz IPS 1080p G-Sync Compatible

Now AMD has the desktop market cornered. I bet next year Zen 3 will see a price hike?

if intel cant answer with anything, the top skew will most likely increase in cost.

also depends on how much of a reputation they want to build with Value. if intel is never disqussed in a PC scenario, then they have won.

tho i doubt that intel will lose that much brand reqognition.

Exactly, but a lot of people are insinuating that because they say effortless 1080p gaming it's not capable of 1440p or 4k

I'm a bit ticked that they put two PCI-E x16 slots right next to each other when they definitely could have spaced them apart

I actually didnt. One of the big criticisms for Zen and Zen+ were "Well the IPC isnt nearly as good so fast 1080p 144+hz gaming suffers with AMD" The only think I found weird about it is the fact that it seems to only focus on gaming, and not gaming + streaming which to me is the real advantage of the entire Ryzen lineup when you compare them to the Intel direct year competitors

I already failed no nut November.

Anyway, 16 core AM4 SKU is awesome, I want to see some awesome build and showcase it, not just like rendering but heavy multitasking like gaming, streaming and more along.

As for TR oh wow 64 core to come..

Gigabyte does a better job at the PCIe placement even on their cheaper boards, compared to Asus, where they only do it on their more expensive models.

Gigabyte

2 GPUs in SLI with 1 slot spacing in between. Bottom PCIe x16 slot can still be used.

Asus 1

2 GPUs in SLI, with 1 slot spacing in between. Last PCIe x16 slot is still accessible.

Asus 2

GPU into the 2nd PCIe x16 slot, covers the other one below it, leaving only with a PCIe x4. PCIe x16 on the bottom will be a better layout.

It's the silliness of selling "gaming CPUs": if they want to emphasize their delivery under stress, they should advertise "impressive 240p gaming!", which is stupid, yet going for the high end and claiming "amazing 4K gaming" (which, btw, they did with Ryzen 1) is also stupid, as pretty much anything since FX (and often even FX) will get you the framerate your GPU will manage to cope with. At best they can go with something like "gamin+streaming+cooking your breakfast because many cores!".

The truth for gaming has always been: don't overspend on the CPU, get decent GPU and monitor, and if anything, spend on good ergonomics (chair, peripherals), because no amount of RGB will fix your column or your carpal tunnel :P

for those who are disappointed with pricing on the 3960X and the 3970X (me too but a bit less so): don't compare this to the 2950X, lol

rtrQ0gm.png

The disappointment (for me at least) has absolutely nothing to do with performance, just that generation to generation price has increased quite a bit. Not necessarily os much that it's a worse deal, it's just that after Intel slashed their HEDT prices the hope was that AMD would continue being hyper aggressive with their pricing, whereas instead it seems like they are just pricing where they can reasonably get away with.

Again, not really any slight against AMD's decision, just a bit of a bummer as someone who was potentially within the market and now likely isn't.

Not just that, but AMD is selling every scrap of silicon they can get our of TSMC. Supply and demand is already pushing prices up in some locations. So increased MSRP would make sense of they don't have not capacity sorted by next gen.

Even if they get more capacity, they may still decide to increase price as ryzen = high end to a growing number of consumers. High end = cost.

Upfront, we want to say that there is a slight version variation between the runs, with the Intel platform running 4.3.4 and the AMD platform running 4.4.2. With that being considered, we do not believe that there could be such a massive disparity between versions that they could not at least be roughly comparable. As you can see, the 3950X here, which is sans two cores and four threads vs. the 10980XE, and let us not forget that the Intel platform is running quad-channel memory. The memory on the X299 appears to be 128GB at 2666MHz, while the AMD Ryzen 3950X runs with 32GB at 2933MHz. While the Intel platform is running slightly slower memory, the quad-channel nature of the platform means that there is far more bandwidth available right out of the gate for the Intel unit. It is also worth noting that these results are both on Dell based systems with the Intel platform being a Precision 5820 tower, which is made for heavy workstation workloads. The Ryzen part is from a claimed Alienware Aurora desktop, which is likely a new top-end gaming desktop from Dell's gaming arm. These could very well be benchmark results run by the dell team to qualify their new platform's performance and positioning. The multi-core scoring was quite a surprise as the 3950X beats the 10980XE with fewer cores and threads than the Core i9-10980XE. The major surprise I think comes down to the single-core score, which the 3950X also wins with a score of 5570 vs. 5453. This is not representative of all workloads available, but when combined with other performance leaks, the future is looking quite bleak for Intel.

Well it seems like it's still 105W TDP, most Double Tower fans should have no issue.

'Optimized for liquid cooling' is another way of AMD saying this chip runs hot.

On another forum I think I'm going to have to suggest everyone get the 3000G and have an overclocking competition with it. It's low enough cost to do that... :D

I wonder if we'll see a head to head from Jay and Steve.
