Fossil says the Hybrid HR should last more than two weeks on a single charge with all features activated, which is far longer than the company's current Wear OS watch can manage. You might expect the extended battery life to come with less functionality, but the watch still can do most typical smartwatch functions — including activity/sleep tracking, heart rate sensing, alarms, displaying notifications, and controlling music. The watch is even 3ATM water resistant.

he Hybrid HR uses physical clock hands on top of a "power-efficient display" (presumably a form of e-ink), so there's no LCD screen using up the watch's battery. Fossil says there is a built-in light so you can still read the time in dark environments, but none of the provided images show that in action. The case size is 42 mm across, with a display size of 27 mm and a thickness of 11 mm.

Most of them are $195 while the metal band versions are $215, I love the fact it lasts to long and charges so fast. I always felt e-ink screens it the way to go for a smart watch. Fossil conciders this to be a hybrid watch but unlike there others it has a screen, while there past hybrid smartwatches uses analog hands to show notifications.

This seems to use a custom OS and requires there app on your phone to manage the watch.

What do you all think?

A very good walk through

1) Custom OS, no thanks

2) 2 Weeks? Yeah, sure, my second gen Moto 360 was supposed to last 3 on one charge. Still had to charge it every night

they said 2 weeks with all the features on. The pebble which is the last smartwatch that I know of with a e-ink screen said 10 days, and mine could easily last a week.

I'd still be skeptical personally.

I'm so glad that more epaper display watches are coming out. I loved my Pebble watches and was hoping for a more premium watch to come around with an epaper display. Hopefully the software isnt garbage.

Edit: the website states that it's only Bluetooth 4.2, which seems like an odd decision in late 2019.

This seems like a good spherical successor. I think I may get one.

My beef is that e-paper displays feel like such a compromise, certainly in 2019.  Yeah, your battery lasts two weeks, but I wouldn't want to use one to time sets at the gym... and you can forget about having an app ecosystem for it.

It's ultimately for the kind of person who gets neurotic about having to charge every day, yet wants something nice-looking enough that they'd take it off at night (and thus could afford to charge every day).

What?  I wear my $$$$ watch at night (shower with it, etc) and that's part of the appeal: I don't have to take it off or worry about it, it's always there on my wrist.

I charge my Apple Watch 5 like every day and a half, it charges so quickly on 5W charger it's not even an issue for me.

A thick ass smart watch with a day battery life and a reflective screen is such a compromise in 2019.
I'm glad there's some pebble-like options creeping back out there.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Now that i've seen it in action thanks to mr. Mobile, i have to say that this is watch is a pretty good compromise. I'd definitely go for it if i was interested in receiving notifications at every second of my life or felt the need to measure every action i take. It looks as good as a watch should, priced accordingly and unlike previous hybrids thanks to the e-ink display the reported information just blends nicely and naturally with the watch face.

The only thing that felt off were the 4 corner leds.

Personally i'll stick yo mechanical. But this is one sector that i might keep an eye on and see where it goes

One day I will be able to play Monster Hunter Frontier in French/Italian/English on my PC, it's just a matter of time... 4 5 6 7 8 9 years later: It's finally coming!!!

Phones: iPhone 4S/SE | LG V10 | Lumia 920

Laptops: Macbook Pro 15" (mid-2012) | Compaq Presario V6000

As many others have said here, I loved my OG pebble, sure it had its own issues but same was it a nice watch. The truth is, for devices this small, compromises need to be made. I'd love to see a 4 week battery life watch, kill the heart rate sensor, turn off vibrators, no fingerprint scanner, mic, speaker or NFC. A basic watch, notifications, time, media controls and I'm happy.

For me I don't want a mini-smartphone on my wrist, just something like the Sony Ericsson liveview, a little chunky, but modern, elegant and most of all useful as a simple window to my phone. Much like the OG pebble.

A thick ass smart watch with a day battery life and a reflective screen is such a compromise in 2019.
I'm glad there's some pebble-like options creeping back out there.

It is good to have choice, but I'll explain my thinking.

The ideal interface is something like the Apple Watch.  Full colour, full-speed animation, a wide range of capabilities and an app ecosystem to extend it further.  The Hybrid HR does have advantages in battery life and reflectivity, but there are many things that simply aren't even an option on that device.  Advanced fitness tracking?  Payments?  Taking a phone call in a pinch?  Nope.

And that's why Fossil's watch is more of a compromise.  You're getting longer battery life at the expense of, well, almost everything else.  The Hybrid HR could last all eternity on a charge, but if I miss a call because my hands were full, it might as well be dead weight on my wrist.

Also, you might want to be careful about calling a smartwatch like the Apple Watch "thick-ass." The Hybrid HR is 11mm thick, and the Apple Watch Series 5 is... 10.7mm.  So if you have to choose one of those two based on how easily it'll slip under a shirt cuff, you choose the Apple Watch!

My biggest issue with the Apple watch, is that its ugly. I much prefer the Fossil smart watch style like below. that is there wear os version.

That's subjective opinion -- it's alright to have that opinion, but I think it looks great with the right case and strap.  It helps that the Series 5 has an always-on display so that it looks more like, well, a watch.  That and a rectangular display is superior for actually using the "smart" part of the watch.  A circular display makes it look like most conventional watches, but also cuts off a ton of info.

Two weeks ... is most definitely not remotely close to enough for me.

It's been probably 15 or more years since I've worn a watch, but the Casios I had then (digital display, 5 alarms, timer, stopwatch, etc) could easily last a few YEARS, with just a little button cell battery.  My parents also had similar watches, as well as analog ones, and those could go a few years on a tiny battery, possibly a bit longer.

I'd like to see a modern smartwatch BEAT that. :)

To be fair I wind my watches up at the end of every day. But that comes with a hand wound mechanical watch, it's to be expected and part of the ownership. You can get automatic watches which have a rotor that rotates as you move the watch but inevitably you will need to hand wind it at some point. An electrical watch is no different you will have to charge it. Unless you get a Casio digitial watch as the battery in them will last up to or more then 10 years. Damn nice watches if you ask me, I use one for work because it's cheap and I don't have to worry about it one bit.

Fossil is just a fasion company they hold virtually no standing in the watch community same as Apple watches. Casio is as far as I know the only smart watch company to look at, Casio is front and foremost a watch company not a fasion company. They actually know how to make a watch.

And those are the only features those watches have.  My watch can track my fitness, make payments, answer calls, reply to text messages, play music, check the weather, control my smart home, perform an ECG, remote control music, order pizza...

Think of a smartwatch the way you look at a smartphone.   Yeah, a smartphone won't last as long on a charge as a basic flip phone, but you wouldn't dare try to get by on a basic flip phone in 2019 if you contact people through anything other than phone calls.  The battery life doesn't matter if it means missing out on the people and events that matter, on making your life easier.

Really, you'd dismiss Apple and Fossil but revere Casio?  Their smartwatches are basically amped-up outdoor trekker watches.  That's fine, but not what I'd call the pinnacle of haute horlogerie.

Right now, I'd say Apple is the only smartwatch maker that has standing in the watch community (apart from conventional brands like Montblanc and TAG Heuer that have their own), and I'd say that's because it respects some of the traditions of watchmaking in a way even Fossil doesn't.  It's case options like ceramic and titanium; it's straps made from Italian leather (even the basic rubber sport bands are derived from Marc Newson's Ikepod watches); it's watch faces that are homages to the origins of timekeeping without just copying mechanical watches (like Solar Dial or California).

Yeah, there are certainly people in the watch community who falsely claim that smartwatches aren't "real" watches, but then there are still people who think electronic music isn't real music because there are no physical guitars or drums.  The open-minded community members accept that smartwatches are real watches -- you don't have to love them or wear them, but they do carry some clout.
