Red Dead Redemption 2 PC benchmarks- move over Crysis ; UPDATED

Humbug

Published by famed GTA creators Rockstar games, the PC version came out yesterday. The game is set at the end of the 19th century and is a prequel to Red Dead Redemption.

At least on Ultra settings the game is extremely punishing on current generation GPUs. Admittedly it looks gorgeous, the question is does it looks so good as to justify these performance numbers. We  are used to thinking about the GTX 1060 and RX 570 as 1080p 60fps ultra GPUs. Well not in this title.

Both AMD (19.11.1) and Nvidia (441.12) had game ready drivers released on monday which were used for this test.

High fps gaming is out of the question at least on ultra settings with current gen GPUs. Await more numbers using more modest settings. Many modern games produce much better framerates on high (rather than ultra) settings with almost no noticable visual downgrades- hopefully that's the case here too. The game supports both DX12 and Vulkan with equivalent framerates, CPU usage is slightly more optimized on vulkan but should not make a difference for most users unless you have an older CPU. For the purpose of the above benchmarking DirectX 12 was used.

Update - 6/11/2019

Guru3d has posted their recommended settings in order to optimize performance with minimal visual loss. Most settings changed to high, texture quality maintained at Ultra, graphics API changed to Vulkan.

Update - 10/11/2019 - turn on async compute for Vulkan

Some users including hardware unboxed had noticed some hitching/stuttering under vulkan. It seems like Rockstar had forgotten to turn async compute on. It needs to be manually enabled in the config files and makes the frametimes smoother. This should help for GCN, RDNA and possibly even Turing.

open the below file

Documents\Rockstar games\Red Dead Redemption 2\Settings\system.xml

look for the below line

<asynComputeEnabled value "false"  />

Change it to true and save

I havent checked RDR2 PC release but I wonder if there is a significant visual upgrade over XOX or PS4P? otherwise this screams like a shitty console port.

Move over GTX1060/RX580 style expectations...

It's 1660Ti/GTX1070 up to 60-70fps 1080p (more than 3 games now)

But these are all midrange or less now.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Honestly ultra settings have always been a joke. Most of the time you can't tell the difference between ultra and high settings other than the significant bump in fps when using high.

High : 100 trees

Ultra : 1000 RGB trees!!!

I wonder if anyone will do a full breakdown like Gamers Nexus did for GTAv regarding which settings impact the game the most.

According to the devs, the PC version has

  • Increased draw distance
  • "Higher quality" global illumination and ambient occlusion
  • "Improved" snow trails
  • "Improved" reflections and higher resolution shadows
  • Tessellated tree textures
  • "Improved" grass and fur textures
  • HDR support
  • Unlocked resolution (4K and higher)
  • Ultrawide aspect ratio and multi-monitor support
  • Unlocked framerate

*Yawn*

It runs fine and looks all right on a ps4, I don't believe for a second that ultra settings aren't just snake oil tacked on to look impressive in benchmarks.

Not always, there was a time where medium and low really looked awful compared to high or ultra but that's no longer the case.

It loves AMD by the looks of things. The 5700 series cards don't even drop off at 4k, which is what usually happens to it in other games. That console deal with Microsoft and Sony doing wonders I imagine.

ya back in the day it made a bigger visual difference to go up to ultra, now we are way past the point of diminishing returns so a massive increase in asset quality and hence a massive hit on performance produces only a marginal subjective improvement.

I don't think it loves either brand of GPUs LOL.

Yeah but this is on ultra. If a XBone can run the game, an RX 580 can as well with some common sense tinkering.

Has the games recommended specs changed or are they still recommending moderate hardware?

No I meant the difference between ultra and high not ultra to medium. Most games I don't bother with ultra and usually stick to high settings because they usually are just as good as ultra for the most part and has much better fps.
