12v led strip from power supply?

Very simple question as I do not know much about electronics, but if I were to power a RGB led strip controller from a pc power supply, how would I do it? Could I use a molex adapter and cut off the other end and connect the 12v yellow wire and black and wire to a DC adapter like shown in the picture?

 

Or would this be unsafe and should I just get an adapter from eBay?

i am not familiar with those conenctors, but theoretically, you take a molex conector rom your psu, the yellow iirc is 12v, the black one next to it is the ground or negative some call it, so you use those two, you could use a male molex connector from some old fans, cut wires, solder if needed to that 12 and black cables and feed those connectors

 

but as i said, i never saw such power conector, but theoretically should work, this is how i used to recycle old fans i had but i didin't connected to 12v, i connected to 5v, so fans spin slower

yes this is to put a short strip inside a case (node 804) the controller needs a dc barrel plug with 12v.

In theory if you only need vdc+gnd you could use any kind of 2 pin connector and it'll work since you only need to route power from A to B

 

What do you call an adapter in this context? The thing shown in the picture is a barrel plug, that should work if that's what you're asking.

 

But then you mention getting another adapter from eBay and I have no idea what that means.

the controller has a barrel plug on the end (usually would plug into an ac (240v) to dc 12v plug transformer thing)

Basically i am trying to make a connector to plug into the power supply (molex or sata, but molex looked easier) to give the controller 12v. I have a dc barrel connector laying around (like in the picture) so i would just need to cut the molex connector and some wire of an old component and then i could use the red and black wires to go to the dc barrel connector?

 

By molex adapter i meant a molex cable sorry... so a molex extension or molex to sata cable or even just cutting the cable from a molex fan

that one on the picture, i think it is not what you need, if we follow color standards and pinout that is a 5v molex to barrel converter but the pin location should give you 12v with that pin configuration

 

it theoretically should work

 

using this

 

 

to connect to a pair of male molex connector, and avoid cutting the molex female connector on the psu, should be doable

 

but the simplest method is buy the product on the last picture you shared

 

both should work but the already built one is simpler to use

thanks... actually i just realized this whole post was a waste of time, because apparently i don't  actually have the male barrel connectors lying around... only the female ones, so im better off buying one of the above cables.

They are safe to use right? i cant find any other than the unbranded ones on ebay...

its probably easier if i just buy one on ebay... they are only £1.80 and i really have no rush to get it.
