HELIOS - ASSEMBLED 2015-SEP-06 - (Caselabs SMH10 | Black/Copper | EVGA SR-2 )

I don't know if I've asked this question already, but are you going to leave the copper exposed or are you gonna wrap it in vinyl/paint it?

Oh, and what's the actual purpose of this build? Gaming? Rendering?

I've painted the copper plated screws on the GPU block, but not the block

itself (yet, at least). The GPU block's upper side is not all that shiny,

and I'm certainly not going to paint the inside or the underside, so for

now I'll wait and see how quickly the non-shiny parts oxidize. If they

turn dark too quickly for my liking I'll give the block a good masking job

and paint the non-wet part of the top side.

As for the rest of the copper parts: Everything which I polish gets a clear

coat (the fan controller cover, the reservoir bits, the screws, the CPU

blocks, the pipes and whatever else I might think of), and the stuff which

I've painted with the copper paint (screws fans) has been given a clear coat

as well.

It will be my internet rig.

Seriously though, it will actually be my internet/office rig, the computing

power will be going towards BOINC for the most part. Maybe I will do

some gaming on it, but since it will be running Linux and I'm not going to

dual boot with Win I'm not sure on that yet. I'd say it probably depends on

how well Steam for Linux and its corresponding ecosystem develops in the

coming months/years.

Edit: 500th Post, yaaay!

*500th reply, I got 500th post ;)

EDIT: Thanks for that btw., everyone! throw-happy.gif

I would asume that blocks of copper sold like this have some kind of coating to make sure they don't tarnish over time. As long as the acid from your hands hasn't affected that, you should be fine. Don't know for sure, though.

Yup, the Germans definitely are great at this sort of stuff (they're not the

only ones, of course ;)).

Thanks! :)

I think Watercool actually did (do?) that on at least some of their blocks.

There actually were a few fingerprints from the factory, but I got them off

easily enough with some polishing.

But yeah, any tarnishing will only be superficial and can be cleaned off

easily with either some polishing, acetic acid (vinegar) or citric acid

(lemon juice), at least those are the ones I've personally tried and had

success with.

Alternatively, I've read that acetone (nail polish remover), tartaric acid

combined with acetic acid (cream of tartar mixed with vinegar, apparently?),

or if you want to go hardcore, hydrochloric acid are alternatives (source).

If there was any coating on it, it might be that the polishing removed it. Again, don't know for sure.

True, but if there had been coating, I don't think the oxidized fingerprints

would have been there in the first place (I'd think they'd have removed those

themselves before coating it), or am I missing something?

Ah, I misread your comment. I thought you meant there were some smears from people touching it. If it was tarnished already, the there wasn't any coat on it...

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to get up in a few hours, so it's sleepy time. :)

That seems to be just "a little" overkill, but hey as long as this build is sexy I couldn't care less with what you do with your build, haha.

May I ask what you're doing for a living?

BTW. Would it be possible to change the text colour on the block to copper? like spray into it then wipe off the excess?

JK, but math is pretty important for (aspiring) engineers... ;)

That seems to be just "a little" overkill, but hey as long as this build is sexy I couldn't care less with what you do with your build, haha.

Yeah, there seem to be some streaks of obsession showing through. It's under

control though... running-circles.gif

I used to study mechanical engineering, but had to drop out last year due to

my prolonged health troubles. I've now started a degree in electrical engineering.

In my break year from college I did some web dev work (good to work from home

when you're recuperating), which has allowed me to make this build quite a bit

more extravagant than it was originally planned (otherwise I would have just

continued saving up parts of my allowance and being frugal in the remaining

parts of my life, which would have required me to cut back significantly on

this undertaking, no CL, slower CPUs, no Titan, less W/C etc. ;)).

Wow nice water block.

Thanks! :)

You mean the GPU block? The writing is actually engraved into the copper, I'm

assuming it doesn't necessarily look like that on the pics if you don't know

about it?

I've actually been thinking about changing that text to black, but I think

it would be too delicate to do properly, or it would take way too much time

even for my standards. It still looks pretty nice as it is in person though,

so I'm not exactly unhappy. ;)

Haha, you know, I really detest reality TV, at least the Jersey Shore

kind of stuff, but you did get a good laugh from me with that gif, so

I'll forgive you and I'll thank you for your enthusiastic support, because

without that this exercise would be much more boring.

Man you get a lot of responses on this thread! I have to get reservations just to post here. ha ha I had to go back 5 pages just to see pictures. New rule - you have to post a picture of the case every 4 pages just so I can remember what it looks like ha ha ha Short term memory lost! what's that caused by?

Haha, yeah. Somewhere around the cable lacing update it just really took

off, and the pace has only been increasing since. Not that I'm complaining. :D

Maybe you've been inhaling too much copper fumes?

EDIT:

BTW there's a table of contents in the opening post... ;)

I think he was talking about the writing on the black block where the fittings go.

What you could do to make the TITAN engraving black is

  1. cover the whole block in masking tape,
  2. cut out the tape covering the engraving using a SHARP cutter,
  3. spray paint the engraving black,
  4. take off the masking tap.

Seems reasonably easy and not time consuming at all (except for the drying time).
