The Bitfenix Spectre Pro Copper Edition

I'll let the pictures do the talking for the most part.

I hung the frames on a thread (still had to rearrange them to cover all the angles).

The masking took about two and a half hours for all fans...

...because I had the genius idea to paint them both front and back, even though

nobody will ever see the back side again, ever. But the perfectionist inside me

just wouldn't shut up. You can also see that I desoldered the wires. Considering

how close together the contacts are on the PCB that's going to be a bitch to solder

back on. Ah well...

First coat of copper paint applied. The paint I'm using is Weicon Copper Spray.

The copper colour comes from actual copper particles (so, it's a metal spray, not

just something that looks like copper). The upside: It's copper! The downside:

It's conductive (most likely, I don't have a multimeter to test this, but I doubt

the epoxy matrix in which the copper particles are embedded serves as a good

enough insulator to make it non-conductive).

I found the paint on eBay, if you google "Weicon copper paint" you should be able

to find more info on it.

Aaand we're done. To be perfectly honest, the paint job could be improved upon.

But considering I don't have a spray booth and practically all imperfections are

well hidden when they're mounted I'm still very happy with the results. I'll

definitely change my procedure though if I ever do this again. It's a learning

process.

Also, to prevent the paint from tarnishing, I gave all the painted parts a clear

coat for protection.

Haha, that would have been something!

The paint looks realistic because it actually is real copper (very fine copper

particles embedded in an epoxy matrix IIRC).

Aha! I'm not the only one that likes LaTeX It would be nice if you could just enter LaTeX into the forum and it would recognize it, parse it and display it correctly.

 

Now don't get me wrong here, I'm not much of a typist (I can't even properly type blind for God's sake), but I like the idea of a clean and unified text layout on the web. If that would exist, you wouldn't see things like

Holy crap, that would be awesome! I have to admit my LaTeX is rather rusty because

I haven't used it in a while, but I reckon it will come back once I get going again.

It's not like it's hugely complicated (unless you want to do something really esoteric,

which is rarely the case for me when I use it for college).

Dear god, don't do that, it burns my eyes! Since getting a uniform web layout is a bit

of an unrealistic expectation I would be happy to at least have customization options

in forums to make it look like I want it to without a huge hassle. I mean, that would

be totally feasible IMO.

I'm not sure how I feel about smilies. On one hand, I do think that some of those

graphics can be pretty funny (OCN has a few rather amusing ones), on the other hand

it can make things look rather immature and childish, especially when they're used

in excess. So I would at least like to have the option to turn them off and have

them displayed as text (I think you can actually do that on some forums, not totally

sure though).

• Weicon Copper Spray (link, pdf). It's basically very fine copper particles

  embedded into an epoxy matrix (hence the clear coat, because I've been told

  it can tarnish). It does look a bit darker than a contiguous piece of copper

  because all those fine particles don't reflect light as well as one single

  surface (at least not if that surface is polished). But if you do some good

  color coordination and don't have copper spray parts and normal copper parts

  right next to each other it's not very noticeable at all (at least not to

  my eyes, your mileage my vary).

• Probably around three. The problem was that to get the paint into all

  nooks and crannies on those frames I had to spray them from many different

  angles, and each time some paint also fell on non-target areas. So I'd

  say all in all the frames probably got around three coats on average.

  Plus two coats of clear coat.

• Thank you, I rather like them myself as well. I'll have to pay attention

  to properly align the hex heads with the hex pattern on the fans though.

Totally true. One of my favorites is the devil smiley from OCN. It has a smiley face

in the front with a flaming background, and is as tall as about two default sized lines

of text. No matter how fun it may be on its own, it screws up typesetting absolutely

hideously! Plus, I really don't like the idea of images embedded within my text, it's

just not semantically correct IMO.

Yup, pretty much. I do it almost automatically now. I consider it much more

annoying when I have to switch to the mouse for something (which I try to avoid

as much as possible with Vi browser extensions and i3, a tiling window manager

which I've set up to Vi-style keybindings as well, so that I can use my GUI

practically without any mouse interference). As long as I can stay on the

keyboard I'm pretty happy.
