NVIDIA GeForce 3070/3080/3080 Ti (Ampere): RTX Has No Perf Hit & x80 Ti Card 50% Faster in 4K! (Update 6 ~ Specs / Overview / Details)

1 hour ago, Bombastinator said:

Interesting.  This implies to me that they feel the new 30 series is weak because there will be new cards that are no faster than the old cards.

What are even basing that on? lol

Discontinuing production of older cards when you've got a new generation of cards launching soon is the norm.

They only did down to 2070 though.  2060s will apparently still be produced.  This implies it’s more or less the same boost in speed as was gotten with 10 series to 20 series.  More was promised by leaks.  So weaker than expected.  It’s possible that AMD has an overactive marketing department as well, but the stuff on the consoles is saying AMD can do 1070-1080 performance with an apu they’ve been producing for development mules for several years now.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

What?

No, it's just that the new cards will be better/cheaper, so once they're out nobody would still buy the old ones unless heavily discounted. No point manufacturing items that either won't sell or make profit. That's how every product evolution works.

I added to my previous post.  I seem to be repetively hitting the post button too fast lately. As to the better/cheaper thing sure.  Compared to their old cards.  They couldn’t not make them faster.  I’m saying they’re looking like they’re probably only faster by the minimum amount though.

No it doesn't, you're wildly speculating.

The 2060/2060 Super are likely still being produced because the 3060 won't launch until next year, just like the 2060 didn't launch until the following year.

Yup, nvidia pretty much always releases top end cards first before looking into the lower end ones. Normal to discontinue in line with that.

Of course I’m wildly speculating.  I didn’t say “did” I said “implies”. Also doesn’t mean No though.  Nobody that can say actually knows.  I think at this time Nvidia is behaving like it’s going to be a power bump of the near same size as last time.  Also Nvidia has no incentive to reduce prices until AMD comes out with something, at which time they could do Tis or supers or whatever.  I could be wrong.  All I’ve got is the standard publicly available data

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

both lines will probably launch quite close to each other so i dont see Tis and supers as a good option they will have to get the prices right or lower them, i am guessing they will launch which in a month of each other

It’s not impossible. AMD said “Holliday” which is generally taken to mean near Black Friday, but pretty much every day is some sort of Holliday somewhere.  Indications of that would be finished AMD cards being put on boats fo shipping.

When 20 series came out, it was only 2070 and above wasn't it? If they're doing same with 30 series, it makes sense to stop making the upper cards that are getting replaced initially. The Turing cards for the lower end will stick around longer until such time nvidia follow up with 30 series versions of them.

Main system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, Corsair Vengeance Pro 3200 3x 16GB 2R, RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut
Gaming laptop: Lenovo Legion 5, 5800H, RTX 3070, Kingston DDR4 3200C22 2x16GB 2Rx8, Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB + Crucial P1 1TB SSD, 165 Hz IPS 1080p G-Sync Compatible

Yes and it was also the first time the x80 Ti came out at initial launch as well.

That under 1v working power sounds the most interesting to me. My RTX 2070 laptop already caps out at 1.05v when it boosts temporarily so hopefully these Ampere GPUs could do more at a lower wattage.

EVGA's website has delisted most 2070/2080 Super SKUs, and the 2080 Ti is gone completely. Could be a bug, or the 30 series is very close.

Is it still september, the estimated arrival of Ampere?

can't wait for this had my 1080 non ti since 4 weeks after launch in 2016.

she's been a good card.. but everything is 100% GPU Usage on medium settings.

This 3080Ti Upgrade for me is going to be a large jump for sure.

She will live on as a Plex Hardware Video Decoder in my Unraid Server, so an easier life till end of life.

Would you consider the top RDNA 2 card if it performs the same as the 3080TI/3090 (maybe slightly worse with RT "On"), but is on-sale for 20% cheaper?

Also more "confirmed"  leaks from Tom:

For myself probably not. Firstly I don't believe they'll be able to match performance, I use things that like CUDA, and Team Green has always been reliable for me while it seems every AMD card is plagued with driver issues for a while after launch. And $300 or so is negligible when it's something I'll be keeping for probably 4 years.

Where are all the "leaks" about 3000 - series NVENC - and NVDEC - changes, god dammit?! I wanna know if there's HW - accelerated decoding - support for AV1, I wanna know if there's any new codecs NVENC can do, I wanna know if NVENC has seen further quality - improvements. Such a nuisance, when everyone only focuses on gaming - performance ☹️

I'm planning to possibly get a 3080 and I just wish someone leaked info on any changes to this stuff as well ☹️

You could try sending Tom @ Moore's Law is Dead a reader mail as he does try to answer as many pressing questions as possible during his weekly podcast.

He seems to pick ones that are well thought-out or will help him fill-in information gaps.

I'm probably going to pick up the cheapest of the new cards when they come out. My 980 is starting to age well.

Hi all. Any news on the 3080 Ti? Also, what's people's strategy with preordering these things? I am UK / EU-based, so which online shops are best? I know of Scan, but other tips would be appreciated. How about direct from EVGA too? Did they offer preorders with the current models? Thanks for the info.
