Hot, Steamy Microtransactions — EA to return to Steam

FezBoy
Quote

EA is once again selling its games through Steam, and it'll offer its EA Access games subscription service through Valve's platform as well. The partnership starts next month with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and multiplayer games such as Apex Legends and FIFA 20 are on the way to Steam too. When the latter games do arrive, you might find that your Origin and Steam friend lists are integrated.

EA's will soon start selling their games on Valve's marketplace Steam, which many people are extremely loyal to and consider to be the best online marketplace.

Quote

With that in mind, you'll need to create an EA account (if you haven't already done so) to buy or access EA games on Steam. You'll also need to use EA's Origin launcher during the setup process, Blank said, but once you've linked your accounts, you'll be able to launch the games directly from Steam.

While linking friends lists is good, I don't think that requiring EA accounts and the Origin launcher is the best idea.  People don't want to have to install another piece of bloatware, especially when this is being marketed as decreasing the bloat.

Quote

Blank wouldn't discuss specifics of the partnership with Steam, including whether EA got a more favorable revenue share from Valve than other publishers and studios, nor whether Valve will receive a cut of in-game purchases. There's also no word as yet on whether you can expect to see EA games on other digital storefronts, such as Epic's store. The publisher isn't ruling that out, however.

While I think that reducing exclusivity is definitely a good thing, requiring an EA account and the use of the Origin launcher makes no sense to me, especially for singleplayer, purportedly micro-transaction free games like Jedi: Fallen Order.

This is the single strongest argument for why Valve should moderate shovelware I have ever seen.

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Everybody turns to dust.

The blood is on your hands.

The blood is on your hands!

Pyo.

I wonder if some developers will delay their Steam release in favor of their own DDS first. Developers are also making users setup accounts and using their bloatware to help mitigate piracy. I understand wanting to protect their work but they'd be better off requiring a Steam account then their own account for purchase verification.

Fuck off, Hardline was great!

...after a few patches. It was fun and different, and actually plays really well now, but everyone left it and never returned because it had a shit launch, and then EA killed Visceral.

I'm figuring EA isn't making any sales, despite the fact that no one cares about their games anymore, so they're moving back to Steam. The only time I very occasionally launch Origin is for Burnout, especially after my account with BF4 got accidentally deleted/locked. There goes $15.

Although I begrudgingly use the Origin Launcher, it is nice to see some positive support for what the consumer actually wants instead of forcing us to remember which of the 14 thousand launchers pertains to what game we want to play. That being said, if EA & valve can't find a way to integrate Steam's multiplayer functionality directly into their games in a way that still allows Steam users to play with EA users without having to create an EA account anyway, then I really don't see the value proposition.

As a consumer, the last thing I want to continue doing is logging into multiple accounts or systems - I want ONE gaming launcher, ONE music streaming interface, ONE video streaming interface, and ONE software store, all of which operate cross-platform between Windows, MacOS, Android, iOS, and Linux. Give me anything else, and you're only dissuading me from purchasing items I desire.

its made by Respawn. Respawn being one of the last good names under the EA banner. their games have been less succecful than they deserve. and EA more or less tried to run the studio into the ground. somehow they are still standing today.

i might be interested in it as Respawn makes some really nice games.

Well I'm having a blast with Apex, but that is made by Respawn Entertainment which has only made good games up to this point so i dunno :P Also them having to be under EA's wing does not help the microtransaction stuff, but for a f2p game its not that bad tbh.

Yeah for the 2 weeks i got to play it on PC still all the servers died.

Yeah, seems like another case of EA forcing a game out early, so it sucked. They got it running pretty well, but by then everyone had already left and EA had another studio to shut down. It's like at some point EA just thinks they need studios to die so they can spend less money on them and focus on things like FIFA and maybe Battlefield, so they force a studio to produce a new game they haven't done before, rush it the door, and when the game fails use it as an excuse to shutter the doors.
