Just saying. The kids using the chromebooks even know they are crap. Our schools use them because they are hilariously cheap pieces of junk that are easy to integrate into the network. The kids would rather use the horrible old dell laptops that run an actual OS and not some jank Android clone.

So its a Macbook Polycarb in 2019? Shame it runs ChromeOS or I'd buy it.

Brands I wholeheartedly reccomend (though do have flawed products): Apple, Razer, Corsair, Asus, Gigabyte, bequiet!, Noctua, Fractal, GSkill (RAM only)

I'll just point out that you CAN switch between accounts, as long both of the accounts allow it by domain policy.

you can install windows or linux, you just have to wait for someone to add support to flash the firmware for compatibility

A very important bit that most people miss, is that you can use Google Chrome Remote Desktop, which allows you to connect to your big computer and do all the work that way, thus you can use a 2000$ anywhere you are, and even playing games is kinda similar to what Google Stadia will be, of course not all games, Call of Duty World at War ran normally but the mouse control was broken so it was near impossible to aim, but playing Crusader Kings 2 felt as if the game was running on Chromebook, latency so low that you can't really notice it. Even for all my university work, I just connect to my pc at home, because once done, I just disconnect and can continue at home. This is the very reason why I love chromebooks + battery life + security of the disk. The police had to keep my chromebook because they couldn't get files from it, due to encryption.

Yes you can, it's actually quite easy, you just enter developer mode and then you get access to the linux terminal, and once you're there, you can do anything, there ever exist alternative Chromebook OSs.

I love my Chromebook, it cost me around 400€, it has 1080p IPS display and around 12 hours of battery, a solid keyboard and trackpad. I don't think they are crap, because you can't judge a line by it's worst products, there also exist windows laptops that are so bad that you won't want one if it was given to you. It's always a specter, you have good ones and bad ones, that is true for everything that exists.

The best way they could make the chrome OS a real OS is to just admit it is Linux.  Then , simply, easily support everything that Linux, and a lot of UNIX bring to the table.

The tin foil hat theory Linus has isn't that crazy at all. Younger people are using more and more mobile devices like smartphones and tablets as the one and only "computer device". I used for a long time tablets and during my entire high school. If Google can keep improving it's OS more and more they can for sure get a huge part of the market and maybe steel some windows users.

That's a mighty big "if"

Google has a very nasty tendency of losing interest in its products and abandoning them.

The "kids" sitting in a meeting and want wo show something - and fail, because the company refuses guest access and have no cellular coverage in the room.

That already takes place and I'm sitting there with my x201 dualboot XP & Win7 and run everything offline.

Also the IT department would say no, because thy can't manage it via MS Active Directory. Wellcome to good offline legacy IT world.

That would mean defeat for them. They'd love to "androidize" the laptop market. They may build it on Linux, sure, but their goal is to have their own MacOS in terms of control and "wallgardenness" (yes, I feel liek making up words today :P). It'll be a linux derivative just like MacOS is "Unix derivative".

Ultimately, truly open Linux systems won't make them the kind of money they're after, the kind of money Android's, and Google's for that matter, ubiquity brings. Just like Microsoft opted to "androidize" Windows when making Windows 10, just to tap into exactly the same stream of revenue.

No expansion of the Linux we know will take place on the wings of a corporation, not without severely twisting its spirit one way or another.

The hardware seems ok.  The problem I have is the operating system.  I consider both the chrome browser and the chrome OS to be effectively spyware.  I dunno.  Perhaps this would go better in “unpopular opinions”

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

personally I would never use chrome os. I'd rather have a slower pc that has options than one that is locked down. But that's just me. Also public schools suck and they use them because they are cheep. It doesn't mean they are good. If you ask anyone in high school that knows anything about tech they will tell you that they suck xD.

Tomska bought a bunch of dirty magazines from a local store, including one that he said had been there for years, in this video. Lol. This didn't refer to tabloids, but it's kind of similar in that barely anyone buys them.
