Poll : is color coding confusing ?

Please look at two examples below and vote (vote is in the first post at the top) for which of them you find less confusing, cleaner, easier to understand. Feel free to sound your thoughts on additional improvements and alternatives.

- Variant A - current implementation with color coding using gold and gray colors

Gold color signifies the best units inside each tier determined by performance metrics and lack of any major problems. I.e these units should be at the top in the list of your options (disregarding their price, we only tier performance and quality here).

Gray color signifies units that we either lack any good reviews on or platform it uses, but we do know enough to place it in the tier temporarily if there are demand for them, such as recent Seasonic Core and Antec Neo Eco Zen PSUs. Or there are some minor problems that we feel are nevertheless major enough to place these PSUs below other units in the tier without moving it to lower tiers. I.e these units should be last in the list of your options for this tier but they're still better than units from lowest tiers in most cases.

Vote for this variant if you prefer it over the next one.

How it looks :

( Keep in mind that this is revision 14.1 to which Lazy Luke didn't update this thread yet )

Spoiler

Legend :
Gray - units with various issues and concerns, buy cautiously, see notes in the spreadsheet
Green - small form-factor (gold and blue colors are disregarded due to scarcity of SFX PSUs)
Gold - best units in the tier (includes requirements for blue color in tier A)
Blue - quiet operation under moderate load

[1] Seasonic Focus based units made prior to Jan 2018 had incompatibility issues with high transient GPUs like AMD Vega, source.
[2] Corsair SF units with LOT codes from 194448* through 201148* potentially have problems, Corsair conducts a voluntary replacement, source.
[3] Bitfenix Formula Gold and Whisper M 450/550W SKUs have just one rail for GPU power cables and trip with high transient power draw GPUs like AMD Vega.

- Variant B - remove gray and gold colors and split them off as separate tiers

We remove most of the color coding, keeping only colors for SFX (green) and quiet (blue) units at least for now.

Gold colored units will be moved to tiers X+ above current tiers.

Gray colored units will be moved to tiers X- below current tiers.

We haven't decided how to signify multi-rail units using this scheme as it would get rather messy if we keep it like it were before using subtiers (look at the example for variant A) but if we're going to implement this variant that would be a matter for the next discussion. For now i've merged multi-rail units with single-rail to just show-off the topic of this poll cleaner.

You decide whether this variant looks cleaner and more accessible.

Antec "neo eco" gold is discontinued now, not even listed in thier website .... They replaced it with "Neo Eco Zen" which is also gold rated.

Hmm. Then forget about it, it might be as well not moved to Focus GX then. Ask the Antec support for confirmation that HCG Pro Gold are GX (and possibly from what date it is) and ask retailer what are manufacturing date of the units they sell.

I'm currently busy with this around Antec and some others... can't exactly say when i have answers

If you can, also ask them about thier new psu line "Neo Eco Zen" and whether they have discontinued thier "Neo Eco Gold" line or not.

It's Andyson, that doesn't put much hopes in it, maybe tier B at most.

Edit: yeah, they don't claim OTP, it's no higher than tier B regardless of platform.

A few months ago, everyone was hating on the Focus PSUs from Seasonic. Now the Focus GX is listed as Tier A. Does that mean it's a new revision that's actually good, or what?

From the looks of it, yes. There are no GPU shutdown issues reported for Focus GX and our methodology were reconsidered to limit performance considerations to 110% overload, not 125% where Focus showed excess ripple in that one review. Focus FX and derived units are still detiered tiered to A- because there are slight possibility that users will receive V1 version of it which has GPU shutdown issues, but Focus GX are fine.

Hello

May i ask why the CX was not moved down to the category of overload ripple?

For the same reasons why Focus were moved up to tier A-

Quote

all issues are found inside light overload (110%) or lower.

if we were to detier CX for that, we would have to tier down about the whole PSU market... hence we chose to limit ourself to data up to 110% overload, except with catastrofic faiurures, which didn't occur at the live testing, nor has Ronaldo himself had anything as I spoke with him about it

again, if cm were to replace people's old versions with RMA, this wouldn't really be a problem

They RMA'd my friends MWE Gold fully-modular in 1 day, and he waited few days to import new one into the country and he sold it and got bequiet! Pure Power 11, but Cooler Master do got great RMA for stuff like PSU's, they'll probably replace it, before MWE Gold he had EVGA G3 which also gave him problems

Interesting fact, although I fully agree with placing vero l2 in tier c because it's a totally budget when it comes to the quality of electronics, in my country (Poland) this psu is recommended by our tech youtubers for computers for often even 4-5k zlotys (1000-1300 $) ?, totally absurd but spc has strong marketing here, for example one of the biggest pc shop in Poland - sorted by popularity.

Just as Seasonic S12II or most of EVGA units ... Most people have no idea what they're saying, they just think that if brand-name are known for some good PSUs then you can recommend any of their PSUs equally.

Yea, true, i remember when people recommended s12ii very much, when even then there were much better units on market for similiar money. The same about spc in my region, even though we have practically all models of most manufacturers available in stores.

It looks like almost exact match on Sirfa platfom used in TT Grand RGB Sync, FDB fan, Rubycon caps, which puts it in tier A temporary position until proper reviews.

https://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=813&area=en

and which one should I get?

From a quick look :

First link: Silverstone Essential Gold - tier A

Second link: Silverstone Strider Gold - tier B+ nope, this one = Astro GD, so tier C nope again, It's Silverstone Strider Gold S - tier B+

Why these two anyway ? Anything else available ?

BeQuiet Straight Power 11 Gold

Deepcool DQ-M

Enermax Revolution D.F

(650 or 750W)

Best/quietest of these three in A+ tier? SP 11 is the most expensive of these by a small bit...not sure if worth it.

The DF has that interesting reverse spin but worried it might fail faster because of it...also that fan looks somehow cheap plastic :D

Can't find Revolution DF, SP11 on cybenetics :(

SP11 are E11 on Cyben.

Reverse spin function of Enermax are manual AFAIK, i.e it doesn't trigger by itself.

Deepcool DQ-M, Enermax Revolution D.F and Bitfenix Whisper M are the same platform, so differences are essentially down to warranty, support and aesthetics.

If bq! E11 are more expensive then the choice out of other two probably depends on where are you from, if smth close to China then Deepcool, otherwise Enermax (so it would be easier to ship a unit for RMA if needed).

bit off-topic but just wanted to share some thoughts, I finally bought CX550 2017 (arrives in two days) due high positive reviews in linus tech forum and some other websites plus it's ranked Tier B+ meaning it's supposedly superior to some tier C or B gold units like EVGA 600 GD 2019, anyway i hope i don't regret the purchase coz omg cx550 was very cheap, it makes me feel kinda unconfortable that i might get some low quality garbage but i trust linus tech tier list more than all those guys in tom's hard, techpower or reddit saying: "dont go cheap on psu, u get what you paid for, if it blows dont cry, $100+ and gold or nothing"  ?

Looking to build an SFF PC, strictly for gaming. From what I've seen Corsair SF450 Platinum should suffice for Ryzen 5 3600 + GPU as high as RTX 2070, and I'm aiming for a more budget GPU anyway. Any thoughts on this?

I would go for SF600 Platinum, just to future-proof the build, but I can't find it in stock anywhere, at least not for it's regular retail price.

Yes, it would be enough.
