Poll : is color coding confusing ?

Please look at two examples below and vote (vote is in the first post at the top) for which of them you find less confusing, cleaner, easier to understand. Feel free to sound your thoughts on additional improvements and alternatives.

- Variant A - current implementation with color coding using gold and gray colors

Gold color signifies the best units inside each tier determined by performance metrics and lack of any major problems. I.e these units should be at the top in the list of your options (disregarding their price, we only tier performance and quality here).

Gray color signifies units that we either lack any good reviews on or platform it uses, but we do know enough to place it in the tier temporarily if there are demand for them, such as recent Seasonic Core and Antec Neo Eco Zen PSUs. Or there are some minor problems that we feel are nevertheless major enough to place these PSUs below other units in the tier without moving it to lower tiers. I.e these units should be last in the list of your options for this tier but they're still better than units from lowest tiers in most cases.

Vote for this variant if you prefer it over the next one.

How it looks :

( Keep in mind that this is revision 14.1 to which Lazy Luke didn't update this thread yet )

Spoiler

Legend :
Gray - units with various issues and concerns, buy cautiously, see notes in the spreadsheet
Green - small form-factor (gold and blue colors are disregarded due to scarcity of SFX PSUs)
Gold - best units in the tier (includes requirements for blue color in tier A)
Blue - quiet operation under moderate load

[1] Seasonic Focus based units made prior to Jan 2018 had incompatibility issues with high transient GPUs like AMD Vega, source.
[2] Corsair SF units with LOT codes from 194448* through 201148* potentially have problems, Corsair conducts a voluntary replacement, source.
[3] Bitfenix Formula Gold and Whisper M 450/550W SKUs have just one rail for GPU power cables and trip with high transient power draw GPUs like AMD Vega.

- Variant B - remove gray and gold colors and split them off as separate tiers

We remove most of the color coding, keeping only colors for SFX (green) and quiet (blue) units at least for now.

Gold colored units will be moved to tiers X+ above current tiers.

Gray colored units will be moved to tiers X- below current tiers.

We haven't decided how to signify multi-rail units using this scheme as it would get rather messy if we keep it like it were before using subtiers (look at the example for variant A) but if we're going to implement this variant that would be a matter for the next discussion. For now i've merged multi-rail units with single-rail to just show-off the topic of this poll cleaner.

You decide whether this variant looks cleaner and more accessible.

PCPP links were a nice addition ! Only that i'd linked 650W (for tier A and up) \ 550W (for B+ and lower) versions where available as being the most optimal choice for most systems, makes comparing units in the list easier too.

Hi Luke, i will pair a new psu with a i5 9600k oced and a rtx 2080. Would a Gigabyte G750H (87$) or a Corsair CX650 2017 (80$) do the trick? The one i wanted, the Corsair TX650M, costs like 137$.

I really liked the gigabyte one for being a gold unit, but there are reviews that says it has blow up and fried everything, is it really a good unit?

Thanks for your time!

lemons will always be a thing... as far as i'm aware is g750h a downgraded CWT GPS, which shouldn't do that much in the first place

what do you have available at your pricerange for ~550w?

At the same price and tier, nothing. RM550X for example is almost double the price of the gigabyte one here :/

The quality of the CX450 does not change whether you buy it for $50 or $20. You do not get a worse CX450 because you bought it on a sale. Correlation? Maybe. But by that logic, just tier the entire list based on PCPP prices or 80+ rating.

How does this have anything to do with it being positioned wrong? The issue was that you said that it was in tier D because of it being super cheap.

You're misunderstanding. It's a figure of speech. When people say something is "cheap" it can also mean "low quality". Not necessarily that it's priced low.

@LukeSavenije
can you look into new Kolink stuff? Enclave series looks interesting, inexpensive(not necessarily cheap) 80+ gold, LLC and DC-DC, full-modular, there is also v2 KL series which is 80+ bronze and semi-modular (classic branded ones got fixed cables, not semi-modular) but it's not online yet even on their site, caseking got description saying it's DC-DC so it might be a semi-modular competitor to something like Cooler Master MWE V2
