Software that stops you from moving to linux?

I have used both linux and windows for quite a while at this point. And have been looking at switching over to linux as my main OS for a while but everytime I try I get caught yearning for software that just isn't on linux at the moment like ableton (Yes I know there are alternatives for linux, but I learnt in and like using ableton).

 

And virtualising windows to use those software feels like it kinda defeats the point. So I was just wondering what software stops other people from switching over to linux full-time.

The entire adobe suite, Vegas Pro, Code Composer Studio, pretty much any .exe program I code in visual studio, Solidworks, Autocad, Rainmeter, OpticalRayTracer, HWinfo, Windirstat, CrystalDiskInfo, CrystalDiskMark, many steam games, etc

Well, personally nothing. Most of what I need is accessible though a web browser so I'm almost set. The few applications that don't and I haven't yet found Linux replacements for I do virtualize Windows using QEMU and just run them in there.

 

So I use Linux as my primary OS because I'm no longer dependent on most Windows software. Even now I'm slowly finding alternatives to the few I still need.

For me personally, it's a little less about software directly stopping me from getting into Linux, but more about the time investment. Indirectly it is gaming.

Most of my free time spent on my system is gaming. Free time is in limited supply these days, and while I'd like to learn Linux at some point in my life, free time prioritization favors entertainment first, not learning how to get what I use up and running on Linux. It's one of those "I wish I had done it when I had the time" type of things.

I value my time and already did the experimenting with Linux as a Desktop bit in the late 90's. It was horrible. Had a friend try it in 2006, it was still horrible. I don't recommend it.

 

When I put it that way, it seems like "Try Linux" is the computer techie's version of trying psychotic drugs.

For me, that'd be Linux.

 

Hence why I've been playing around with a few versions of Unix should Windows no longer be viable.

honestly it's like half the things on this list that stop me from moving over aswell. including that my degree is mainly based in making programs for windows systems. and the windows file system.

Yeah, programming and engineering software is almost 100% windows only.

 

If 10% of my time is spent using just the OS and 90% using the programs on it, why would I switch to linux and virtualize 90% of my work for 10% benefit...

That's not even including all the time to set up and troubleshoot wine/emulators/virtual machines/other crap.

A bunch of random programs that I couldn't care to list and Vegas Pro.

The only applications I need are chromium/chrome web browsers for everything web related(50% of my computing activity) , steam for games(20% of my computing activity), and something like text editor/IDEs for coding(remaining 30% of my computing time). 

 

As you can tell, nothing is keeping me from switching(been using Linux since 2015).

All of these applications have alternatives. 

 

Vegas pro/Adobe=> daVinci resolve/Kdenlive/gimp

 

Code Composer Studio => there is a native Linux version 

 

.exe => code your application in mono. Native Linux .exe executables are a thing. 

 

 

Solidworks/AutoCAD => CAELinux, libreCAD, openCAD ect. 

 

Rainmeter => Linux desktops already do applets, radical customization, and widgets by default. 

 

OpticalRayTracer => there is a native Linux version. 

 

HWinfo => use the terminal. Lots of scripts that will parse terminal data into pretty graphs and icons if that's your thing. 

 

Windirstat => lots of Linux alternatives that are superior or outright clone of this. Search disk analyzer that is preinstall on Ubuntu. 

 

Crystaldiskinfo/crystal mark => lots of alternatives and plus the good old terminal ultilities that can do this.

 

Not saying these alternatives are superior in user friendliness, features, and convenience but they can do every core functionality these windows app you mention do.

See the problem is that you cannot use alternatives.

At least not in school or in industry.

 

What are you gonna do when someone at work sends you a .sldprt file and expects you to make a .sldasm?

Or when a professor asks for a ccs file submission?

Or when you need to edit and return a premiere pro project file?

You can't use an alternative to do this kind of stuff.

Nothing because everything I do works natively on Linux or works perfectly with Wine/Proton/whatever.

if you have any actual skill in those programs it shouldnt be much of a leap to use the linux alternatives.

The point isn't that it's hard to switch to linux.

It's that you CAN'T switch because you are required to use industry standard software at university or at work.

 

Why do you think people use computers at work instead of typewriters...

If you tried using a typewriter you would get fired when your boss asks for a pdf.

obviously you use what youre told to use at work

but if you are told to make a pdf you dont need windows for it.

if you are told to make a song you dont need fl studio for it

if you are told to edit a video you dont need to use the standard for it

only when you are told to use sony vegas do you need to do so.

and the higher ups are wrong when they do that, the only thing that matters is the end goal.

it's "stopping you from using linux"

not "why you cant use linux at work"

or "is your boss dumb and tells you to use a specific program?"

i personally wouldnt work at a place that forced me to use windows.

also you arent forced to use windows programs at uni

Sure there is software that doesn't work on Linux yet but that doesn't mean 90% of professional tools don't. Many places would love to use opensource as they don't have to pay for huge licensing fees but the guaranteed support is a huge selling point. Also I doubt people would be asking for Premiere files. That's not really how it works unless you are in a studio or chop house and then you would probably be on their workstation anyways and wouldn't need to buy AdobeCC.

There are standards in place so that people can work on projects together.
