My Weird yet effective Ps4 Cooling mod

Update: I noticed a high pitch noise now since my fan/system is so quiet and it turns out the fan is creating it. I have a launch pro Delta fan and apparently they have this famous issue/defect. I ordered a Nidec fan from Aliexpress since i read here and there that the newer fan eliminates the whistling high pitch sound the Delta fan produces. Other than that when it comes to gaming the fan doesn't seem to go higher than lv2 now no matter which game. I used a strip of electrical tape to better/isolate air flow a bit and helped. Fans doesn't seem to go over lv2 as far as i can tell. IMG_20200725_114633.thumb.jpg.84e64c865dccda4620a882bcb48ee354.jpg

Played hours of Tsushima and maybe 30 minutes of TLOU2 and not a peep, besides the fan whistle. Crazy how this mod is effective. Only sad part is that i discovered it towards the end of the life cycle.

Not sure if links are accepted or not but here is a link to the store/seller of the fan: https://bit.ly/39rVmEb

Hello guys,
since I saw this 3d, I decided to make changes too.

I was inspired by both JahJah192 and andstorm.

Above I put the sink be quiet pure rock lp; the glue I used to attach the be quiet brackets is a two-component 'Pattex' epoxy glue, so that I can remove it in the future.

While underneath I drilled where the memories are located, and to each I attached with thermal glue some heatsink (14.5mm x 14.5mm),  attached an inlet fan and four tiny foot.

PS: When I disassembled it I took the opportunity to replace the APU paste with the Noctua NT-H1.

That's all for now, work in progress...

Some might say that putting a heat-sink on a heat-sink isnt as effective as just UPGRADING/REPLACING THE STOCK COOLER ENTIRELY.

Some may say that :P

just goes between Pro and stand, if you look closely you can see it in the last pic. and if you follow the white cable there is a usb hub connecting everything and the controll unit for the fan.

Hello!

I'm a bit late to the party, but I want to say thanks to everyone for the examples of mods you have made. They helped me to go and try my own.

I took the cooler and heatsink from an old server laying around with cyber-junk at work and brought it back to life lol.

I've been testing my mod for about a year now and it works like a charm, the pipes get super hot if the fan isn't on (to test conductivity) and when I turn it on it goes completely silent. Thanks thanks thanks!

I'll attach pics of my ps4, it isn't fancy but gets the job done.

I'm also late to the party but thanks to everyone's idea most especially @Mustiyo, I decided to mod my own phat ps4. I used a soldering Iron with a tip of blade to slice out the plastics. .I also bought the cheapest, lightest and  rgb flashy cpu fan + cooler I could find online. I also didn't use any glue to stick it to the ps4 heatsink. I used copper wire as hooks to fasten it real tight

I of course replaced the thermal paste with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut on the apu die,

Lastly, I also decided to make a cut out the plastic on the other side and put a fan right on top of the ram chips.

Hey @Mustiyo, I just happen to have found your post. Years too late but great work for doing your mod, congrats! And thanks for giving me props.

Linus just posted a new video ("I'm shocked how well this worked" --> -DUWTteit-0) doing something similar with a Steam Deck. I refered in the comments, that we have done something like that a loooong time ago xD

wish you all the best and until an other time.
(I actually would love to try the mod on the PS5, but I don't have one yet, too overpriced at the moment)

I know it’s too late but a just want to show how this post inspire me to make my own project! I thought try to make an adapter to use a PC dissipator directly on ps4 cpu rather on heatsink, I don’t try yet to turn on the system! I’m waiting the small heatsinks for RAM arrives from Amazon because I don’t had use the original ps4 heatsink and I know that RAM will get very hot. I will use an ATX power supply on the project because I will need a SATA power plug for a fan hub that I will use with 3 120mm fans to make air flows through entire motherboard. I’m searching too for an PC case not to big but that I can mount all the project.

Sorry for my bad English but is not my native.

Hello, thanks for idea, this mod is amazing.

I have combined PTM7950 thermal pad + 60mm hole under fan + ofc this awesome heatsink mod, used an old, very cheap stock phenom 2 cooler(under this one standard thermal grease was used) with upgraded 92mm silent fan which is running at 7v. Ps fan is always on 1-st gear and that means - warzone dead silent, ghost of Tsushima dead silent, God of war dead silent.

Ps. Tested it a bit more, while the bottom of the console is warm and well cooled, the top plate and top cover get hot as always and the fan probably because of that goes to 2nd speed after hour in warzone

Ps2. exchanged thermal pads to gelid extreme 1mm, cut a hole in right corner of top cover of dimensions 150x70mm, mesh, 80mm fan running on 7v and... Poof all the noise is gone, tried for 2 hours straight in warzone, nothing happens, idle all the time 😄 Console model cuh 1004a

Hey dear people!!!

First id like to apologize for my english since its not my native language!

Ive bought my ps4 Pro on launch day which means its the first version Ps4 pro (CUH-7016 i think). And i loved my console dearly.

Yet in 2018-2019 when plalying god of war, Horizon zero dawn and other demanding titles my ps4 was just so annoying and loud it was unbearable.

So i tried something else i tore it apart and added new thermal compound (Arctic MX-4) and added some new thermal pads (some 10 dollar ones dunno the name but they werent some fancy ones. 1.00mm)

And BOOM my ps4 went quieter it wasnt something significant but noticable. It defo was quieter than before but i still didnt like it. (Im very annoyed by fan sounds. Thats why my pc is a complete silent build)

So after doing some research i got to know a person by the name @Serachja who showed me his build and i was in awe. Willing to mod my ps4 too

WHAT YOU WILL NEED FOR THIS MOD

A cpu cooler  (mine BEquite Pure rock slim)

High quality Thermal compound (Artctic mx4)

A usb fan       something like this  (https://www.amazon.com/AC-Infinity-MULTIFAN-Receiver-Playstation/dp/B00G059G86/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?keywords=Usb+fan&qid=1571527690&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExRjAxUDZSQjFXUVEyJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNDU1NjQ2MzNJREtGMllBMzZFOSZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNTMyNTI2NjNCMVFMNUFXQUtYJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==)

AND GUTS!

First of all what i did was Cut out a Hole in the top of the case (The one you can remove to access the fan)

InkedScreenshot_20191020-00553Player_LI.thumb.jpg.a2f344119aa210c54085fc2058ec5bfc.jpg

After that i cut out the Plastics on the inside To match the hole i mad on top (BE CAREFUL AS YOU ARE CUTTING NEAR THE PSU AND FAN)

screenshot from tronicsfix

1635478631_InkedScreenshot(85)_LI.thumb.jpg.424cbbc745fd3a46c996afe384d4e420.jpg

After having that piece cut it looked like this. I have done a horrible job at cutting it tho cause i didnt have the right tools and used a sharp knife which i really dont recommend! If possible use a small grinder.

Ive tested the temps several times with the cooler placement on the ps4 heatsink and ive found out putting it where the blue square is resulted in best temp reduction. I dunno why if either the GPU chip from the ps4 is at that spot or that spot just runs hotter. Anyway like i said ive tried it top middle bottom side. And the Bottom side with the blue square was the best out of all 3.

771315872_Screenshot_20191020-005614_VideoPlayer.thumb.jpg.cb78558477c9532a15e1959e1c912ad9.jpg

Now with everything cut ive slapped on a cpu cooler and a USB controlable Fan with 3 Speeds (low medium Fast  i use it on low which is like 900rpm)

20191019_071435.thumb.jpg.ab434c445bdf891a774fc12134436f52.jpg

20191019_071451.thumb.jpg.0b1f2939f97e1c0cbe869be5ec02b917.jpg

As you can tell ive done a horrible job as im frigging bad with saws, knifes etc... Yet i still managed to do it somehow and i bet you folks that have more skill than me will do it even more precise and wont cut out that much plastic as i did.

Im also fortunate enough to have a second ps4 on which im gonna attach a noctua cooler and ill try to do a way better job!

Here is the rest info

of course the cooler will wiggle if shaken ive secured it with Superglue which ive carefully applied around the edge of the cooler.

The fan was also attached with superglue to the case.

You should be able to make a fitting or a jig that holds the cooler in place but i wasnt able to as i dont have access to that kind of stuff.

As you can also tell ive cut little notches on both sides of the cut so the cooler will fit in better you might have to cut yours to size aswell depending on your cooler size.

And you can tell ive done a disgusting job but i dont really care about estetics.

As for noise level the ps4 pro has like 8 or 9 noise levels you can hear them change their levels like a car enginge swapping gears,.

Quiet (idle)   Normal (youtube/netflix)    medium (índie games 2d low performance ones)    High (games like Metro redux which are a little more demanding)    Higher (games like Cod bo4 Online/ rainbow six siege)  FASTEST (God of war RDR2 Open world games in general) And TURBO SUPER DUPER JET ENGINE (that only occures tho if you have dust build up and bad perfomance games)

Higher is like i would say 1600rpm if not even more which sounds little but is quiet loud on the ps4 pro.

With that said ive not noticed the ps4 changing noise levels i dont hear the internal fan ramp up its like its stuck in idle/Normal

GAMES TESTED

KINGDOM HEARTS 3

RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2
GOD OF WAR 2018

HORIZON ZERO DAWN

METRO EXODUS

UNCHARTED 4 in 4k

AC ODYSSEY

APEX LEGENDS
FORTNITE

PUBG

Not one of those games managed to make my ps4 louder which almost brought a tear to my eye.

I havent expirienced any crashes, Overheating issues or other issues!!!

Obviously this will not only void your warranty but sony prolly will punch you in the face if they see you doing something like this to their dear console.

If you have any questions feel free to ask. And i would like to thank @Serachja again for giving me this idea.

Have a great day you all!

I just want to add my testimonial.  This works!

I wondered if people had tried something like this, i searched and found you and the others on this page.  Still, I was skeptical after hearing people say repasting the APU worked —it didn’t work.  I was pleasantly surprised with the heatsink on ps4 heatsink fix.

I didn’t want to buy a new cooler without knowing if this fix worked, so I gave it a shot with a salvaged GTX 960 graphics card heatsink.  The results were impressive with less than ideal parts.  No jet engines anymore.  Red Dead Redemption is quiet now. Metal Gear Solid V is also quiet.  Elden Ring is much quieter.  I’m debating whether to buy a new cooler, because my makeshift rig is working so well.  Too well, I now hear coil whine from the power supply.  Do you hear coil whine?

Hey,  after quite the time, i finally manged to engage in this mod for the PS4 Pro.

It was after a difficult start rather easy. I worked with a noctua cpu cooler, a friend had over.

In my PC build remant supplies, i had mounting brakets over. I cut them down and glued them down.

For the cooler i used a 0,5mm pad, was unsure about paste there.

Did Not test it properly in active Game Play, but after some time in the Toturial of Second Son. The cooler was warm but Not hot.

For the PS4 Fan, i ordered covers, which should arrive next week.

Next step will be to try combine the Fan cable with a usb cable. Have the feeling passive is Not enough.

The slid is not yet Cut, maybe it will remain Open.

Some pics to show the result.
