PCIe 5.0 comes to Intel along with a new socket

NumLock21

TE, the company who makes CPU socket has recently revealed a brand new socket for Intel along with support for PCIe 5.0.

Quote

TE's LGA4677 socket will be made by the company starting from 2021, and is listed on the diagram as supporting PCIe 5.0. It is noteworthy that according to the manufacturer, LGA4677, LGA4189 and LGA3647 sockets will coexist on the market. This is likely due to long-standing contracts using existing sockets and requiring like-for-like replacements over the lifetime of the hardware.

It's schedule for sometime in 2021, with Intel's future Xeon code name Sapphire Rapids.

So... are they just skipping 4.0?

Also why is 5.0 coming out so soon after 4.0?

Because 5 comes after 4. :P

PCIe 4.0 was standardized in 2017 but not adopted widely until this year.

PCIe 5.0 was finalized in May of this year, after AMD had finalized the 5xx chipset and motherboard spec, so they used 4.0.  It wouldn't make sense for intel to use 4.0 for what they are developing now, and they are only upgrading because AMD did.

Server stuff isn't my interest area, but there are alternative interconnects other than PCIe in use. Things don't stay still, and there is a bit of overlap with future interconnects more closely related to PCIe.

Because the group that runs PCIe standard got their act together. And the industry has a big desire for more interconnect bandwidth. 5.0 spec was finalized in May. Both AMD and Intel should be going DDR5/PCIe 5.0 in 2021.

No you're not.  They STILL can't get production levels up for 10, despite shipping processors based on it.

Well they have it slated for release in 2021.

Maybe it's "JK, probably"?

What are they likely to be using it for? I'm given to understand, at least in the consumer space, we haven't even fully loaded PCIe 3.0 yet.

We sure hear a lot about PCIe lately. PCIe 6.0 will be bound for 2021 if news are true. It just feels like PCIe 4.0 and 5.0 were rushed and are just stop gap until PCI 6.0 is released.

Pretty much everything in servers is getting I/O bound. More bandwidth allows for more stuff within a single rack case. And the server tech generally dictates what comes to Desktop. AMD/Intel may keep desktop on PCIe 4.0 for longer, but 6.0 is probably a ways off. Especially given the cost jumps at each step.

And storage will eventually saturate the connection standards. Everything from IDE through to NVMe v4 on PCIe 3.0 has gotten saturated. They'll get 4.0 saturated soon enough and 5.0 not long after that.

This just highlights how everything Intel has been making after Skylake is only a slight tweak to the design.

4.0 is probably gonna come for us homeboys in the next year or two (following suit after AMD). Upper-end workstations & servers are always gonna be 2 generations ahead. B|

Cuz like, how are they supposed to build a super computer a million times faster than the average PC without PCIe 5.0?

PCI-E 5.0 will be interesting for, among other things: 400GE networking to the server.  400GE switches are becoming a thing in the data center, but PCI-E 3.0 and 4.0 aren't fast enough to handle it at the server level.  5.0 will provide that.

storage storage storage.  Think RAID arrays across multiple nvme ssds, or future ultrafast SSDs.

Intel will likely completely skip 4.0.  They are upgrading because AMD upgraded, and they have no reason to update to a previous standard.  (AMD upgraded before 5.0 was finalized.)

So I'm guessing this is another socket that Intel will only support for a single generation?

All I see is yet more reasons to go with AMD for my next upgrade.

people (especially people that run servers, that this socket will be used for) don't upgrade every single generation anyway.

LTT: "Intel are only doing those because AMD".

The reality is that it's likely cheaper for Intel to go straight to 5 than to engineer everything for 4 when they have new product in the design stage ripe for 5.   There was talk back in May (when 5 was released) that Intel would skip 4 due to how long it took for PCIe4 to be finalized.
