School/Gaming Laptop advice Alienware 17 VS Razer Blade 15

Hello Everyone!

Long time lurker, first time forum poster!

I was hoping I could get some decent advice on picking a new gaming laptop/school laptop. I've narrowed it down between two laptops that I can pick up for discounted near me:

 

Option 1: Alienware 17.3 ($1295.99 )

Intel core i7 8th gen - 16gb Ram

RTX 2070 MaxQ - 1080p 60hz -

1tb Hybrid HDD with 512 SSD

 

Option 2: Razer Blade 15 ($1177.99)

Intel core i7 8th gen

16gb ram - RTX 2060

1080 240hz (I think) - 512gb SSD

 

Any help would be much appreciated as I'm unfamiliar in the laptop space and deal more with desktop PC's. What matters to me most is battery life, screen, and a little portability. But I do know you have to sacrifice some things for the power a gaming laptop brings. I just want the best performance for the best buck, and something to last me the next 2-3 years. Thanks!!!

You probably shouldn't be looking at a 17in if you're going to be bringing it to class. Look at what Eluktronics has, they are cheaper than the blade 15, and should have much better reliability.

Desktop: i7 7700K @ 4.7Ghz, 16GB DDR4, Cooler Master H80i v2, 500GB M.2 SSD, Fractal Focus G *white* case, Gigabyte 1080 8GB

Laptop: EVGA SC17 1070: i7 6820HK, GTX 1070, 32GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD, 4K Gysnc panel

Laptop: Eluktronics Mech 15 G2, i7 8750H, 1060 6GB, 16GB DDR4, 480GB Nvme SSD, 144hz panel

Theoretically I’d be dealing with my local Best Buy as I’d be getting it from there along with the warranty they offer. Still that pretty atrocious... I’ll keep that in mind...

Yeah the size difference is pretty noticeable. Wouldn’t a 17 dissipate more heat then a 15? I’m not exactly sure the difference in performance between the 2060 and the 2070 Max Q...

Best buy don't cover adapters bursting into flames or exploding batteries iirc. That's sent back to razer for support hell. Expect months of delays

The 2060MQ is so under locked that even some 1660 Ti models beat it. Either grab a 1660 To or step up to a 2070. The 2060MQ is a cashgrab

What about the non Max Q 2060 variant? would that be comparable the laptop 2070?

barely faster than the 2060MQ - the 2070MQ is closer to a proper 2060. And the 2080MQ is around a proper 2070 in performance. MQ is basically gimped beyond normal reason.

Both are pretty terrible for school use. Get an ultrabook and have a gaming PC back in your dorm
