AMD’s Ryzen 9 3950X Cinebench, No-OC Score – Achieves A 32% Performance Increase Over 1950X

This is it. This is what I've been waiting for and going soon from a Ryzen 1700 to 3950X without doing anything and just slotting the CPU inside my PC is a tremendous kudos to the AM4 platform.

I would say, since I've been using an up-to-date PC from 1995 this has truly been the best platform I have yet encountered as far as upgrade paths go.  

Top of the line CPU and 2 years (and a half) more than double the performance (2x the core count + meaningful IPC improvements + clock improvements + new process node). 

And all of that with no extreme OC necessary keeping the power/heat consumption in a normal range.

The benchmark was conducted on a stock vs stock basis with no overclocking profile applied to either processor. Without any further ado: the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X scores 8789 points in the Cinebench R20 version. This is a pretty huge score and results in a per-core score of  549. The sample (retail version) that our friends had maintained an all-core boost clock of 3.9 GHz (plus-minus 50Mhz) most of the time during Cinebench and Prime95 testing. Oh, and by the way, the Ryzen 3950X is socketed on an ASUS Prime X570-P and is being cooled using the stock Wraith cooler. Single-core boost was a cool 4.7Ghz.

3000 series Threadripper will be nuts. Windows and apps need to utilize more cores ASAP

I wonder how clocks scale depending on core usage. 4.7GHz on strict single core is insane in terms of AMD clocks. I wonder how much it drops with 2, 3 or 4 cores under load...

Why would they compare it to the first gen, and not the last gen of the Threadripper processor? That seems odd, so it's likely not as impressive a gain as you'd think.

The 2950X is 5% faster at stock, but about 16% faster with PBO at Cinebench R15 multi core. So I guess if they compared it to the 2950X in multi core the only advantage is the higher IPC (15%~) and lower power draw, as the sustained clocks on the 3950X and the 2950X are about the same. however the 3950X has 6%~ higher single core clocks and added to the IPC gains can expect 20%~ uplift in single core. The 3rd generation chips also seem to have a much more aggressive boosting where the clocks don’t drop off as quickly, so I would expect the quad core sustained speeds gap would be greater.

The big question is, what did they do to the 3950X to get that boost? Was it binning? Hardware changes? Or is it just the micro code updates they were talking about for November? 

 

Because of its the latter, this could be bigger than just the 3950X.

If 3900x is some sort of guide. The peak boost single core clock is only spikes. I'd be surprised if a single core can maintain 4.7GHz for a Cinebench single core test.

According to rumors that I saw on, I believe, the redgaming YouTube channel, the spikey behavior was not what was intended, and the delay in the 3950X release was to give AMD time to figure out what was wrong and fix it. 

 

That's part of the reason I really want to see the results with live silicon and the expected November bios updates. I.e. Did they actually fix it? And if so, did it fix it for all of the Ryzen chips, or just the 3950X?

8789 Cinebench R20 for the 16 core is lower than I expect. Even though I know with more cores the sustained clock speed would be lower. I still expect to see 9400-9500. Well, with better cooling, it should be doable.

3900 - 2 times not binned chiplets

3900x - 2 time 1 binned chiplet and one not binned

3950x - 2 times 2 binned chiplets

I think 3950X still only has one high quality binned chiplet. It only need one core to hit 4.7GHz. all cores are 3.9-4.0GHz, similar to 3900X. Threadrippers and Epyc take most of the best binned chiplets.

Hehehe. But one thing I'm also quite looking forward to if it becomes true. It's next year 8 Cores per chiplet.  If AMD makes the 7nm+ production before Intel goes to a new node and makes it only a bit better IPC wise than current Zen3. There goes the gaming crown. (to those who care)

Between all the diagnostic sensors and level of control they've shoved into the chips and how much drop off there is when you start adding cores, more than stable enough once they get the AGESA code fully hammered out.

now i'm curious if there are multithreaded programs out there that demand a more similar clock for all cores over running with however fast the specific core could gun for o_o

(or i might be wrong or outdated on this ._. I've stared at hwinfo for too long and i'm too used to seeing multicore running at roughly the same clocks between each other)
