GPU is not folding (stays at 0%)

Hello everyone,

Just started folding with my new computer and I don't know if it's normal or not but the GPU stays at 0% on the Folding@home webpage.

The CPU seems to be working, do I need to configure something for the GPU to start? Sorry if it's dumb question...

Configuration:

AMD Ryzen 3700X

Sapphire Pulse RX 5700 XT

W10

Have a nice day!

Is your driver up-to-date? Check for update if necessary. (Switch to compute mode in Radeon settings for better performance)

Have you configured the the folding slot correctly? You may have to go to configure-slots to manually assign the folding slot to GPU.

Are you looking at GPU usage in Task Manager? You may have to select a different attribute. (No sure about AMD GPUs, but at least Nvidia GPUs need to select "CUDA" attribute to see actual GPU usage, since the default "3D" attribute does not reflect computation)

I remember the 5700XT being somewhat unsupported in F@H for some time..

If you go to task manager, GPU tab and change one of the graphs to Compute 1 (or any of the other ones), do you see the GPU being used?

The CUDA equivalent tab in task manager for AMD would be 'Compute 1' (at least on my RX 580) :)

Really? This card is listed as supported in GPUs.txt:

0x1002:0x731f:1:0:Navi 10 [Radeon RX 5700 XT] 8220

yea, I saw that one too, but there was also some discussion when the card came out about incompatibility (possibly due to drivers?)

https://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=83&t=31710

Very likely though that must have been fixed at this point.

Thanks @minibois, @SkyHound0202, for your answers.

I found something strange, my GPU is not showing itself inside the task manager (and no I do not have the latest version of the AMD driver because it kept crashing my games, so for now I am using the one just before the last 19.9.2 and it's working, at least for the game). So I googled why my GPU is not showing in the task manager and found this article:

https://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/no-gpu-in-task-manager-in-windows-10/

So I checked the WDDM support version and I do have the version 2.1, so it should be good.

Then I read the comments below the article, and this guy solved this problem by updating W10, so that's what I am trying to do now.

I guess we'll see. Thanks again for your answers!

If you do figure it out, is it perhaps possible you could give an estimate of the PPD you get on your 5700XT?
Finding out your PPD is easiest in the 'Advanced Control' panel of your F@H local client. Click on your GPU in the 'Folding Slots' part and see the 'Estimated PPD'.

F@H client:

It has proven to be quite difficult to find (recent) information about the PPD and I don't see it in the comparison lists right

Initially it was thought that the AMD OpenGL implementation in their drivers was broken for Navi but it has since been confirmed that it is, in fact, that the OpenMM libraries used for Folding@Home dont yet have support for the new rDNA architecture and even when these do come out they will not be back-ported to the OpenMM 21 cores currently used.

So Navi likely wont be supported until OpenMM 22 goes into full production.

Ok, so if I understand correctly, I'll have to wait for the OpenMM 22 version if I want my GPU to fold right ?

Do you have an idea of when this version will be released ?

On the other subject, my W10 version was 1706 (I installed it a couple of days ago directly from a Microsoft USB key bought on Amazon a few weeks ago, I didn't know it would be so outdated...), so now that I am on version 1903, the GPU is showing inside the task manager. So I guess this problem is solved.

Have a nice day!

Hello,

So I guess my GPU is not usable for folding (for now), maybe I should try to update the AMD driver now that I have the latest version of W10?

Do I need to configure manually the slot for my GPU? Or should I just wait for this OpenMM 22 release ?

I wouldn't expect Core 22 to be released for a few months yet at the earliest. The initial Beta tests of it occurred in July and August with mixed results and these things tend to take time. I would expect to see at least a few more Beta tests of Core 22 before it is ready for general release.
