Please let us know as soon as you can about the "secret sauce". I have the same Caldit Thunderbolt 3 dock and am limited to 2m. Can't wait to see the longer solution.

I highly doubt that will be anytime soon. He has had this solution for multiple years now. And if he hasn't told us to this day it is weird.

I think it is an engineering sample or something from Intel (they made thunderbolt) and they never got the technology working (mass production, reliability etc).

He hasn't had it for years. The difference is the old board used Thunderbolt 2, this board uses Thunderbolt 3 so a different cable is needed. That's why, at the start, he talks about going back to the 5960X + x99 board.

Can Thunderbolt 2 cables be longer than thunderbolt 3 or how did he do it with his old machine?

Yah, Thunderbolt 2 cables could go much longer. Thunderbolt 3 can go that long but nobody has yet come out with an optical cable for it yet. Right now the longest TB3 cable is 2m but I've seen TB2 cables go 30m+

The solution Linus is talking about (considering it is a cable of some length and uses Thunderbolt 3) is likely the upcoming Corning Optical Thunderbolt 3 cables that are supposed to come out soon-ish (The manufacturer in the link is Sonnet, but the cables are likely based on Corning tech). They propose the ability to send Thunderbolt 3 signals to a run of around 50 meters (~146 ft) or more. So while Linus cannot talk about it openly yet, they have been announced. It's just a matter of when.

When DDR4 came out, you could only get 2133/2400Mhz, 2666Mhz came a bit later and 3000Mhz+ even later still.

That memory was memory he already had since getting that X99 system.

A bit before that (9:55) he also mentioned he doesn't need the extra 5-10% extra performance.

What I suspected at first was a kind of signal redundancy, as he used the internal DP injection port, despite the back I/O has a separate one, but your idea seems more legit

What he has had for years was an optical TB2 link, and has told us before. 

But now he needs TB3, and there was no similar thing for it. There now is, it's pretty likely to be made by the same company, but for some unknown stupid reason that's not supposed to be told...

Years back Corning made a 60 meter (~200ft) long Thunderbolt 2 cable, and no such technology has yet been released to TB3.
