for someone that knows alot about displays: most important things we should look for in a display?

what are the most important things we should look for in a display?

from what i understand so far, here are some of the filters i've been able to come to:

compact size: 

- a relatively small size so it could be packed into a luggage

- anywhere from '27 to '24 or above '21


ideal ratio:

- ideal ratio would defintley be 1:1

- but i think there's almost none of this


i dont know anything else and i cant think of anythign else

main use of display is 

- learning

- reading shit

- youtube (learning)

ideal display would be able to change size + ratio

- but for the thigns i know i care about, 

- none of it exist yet it seems, dunno


height adjustable stand is also important but i think either one of these:


1. 99% of displays do have height adjustable  stands

2. or that there's 0 good commerical sites/shop that actually listed the details of if it has height adjustable  or not

im pretty sure (80% confidence level) taht #2 is the case tho

Why would you consider the ideal screen ratio to be 1:1? Screen ratios have traditionally varied with some form of media, film dictated 4:3 because it was very close to the 1.375:1 ratio of film with sound. Then widescreen formats came around, and as far as I've heard it appeared because it didn't look as good on a 4:3 screen and pushed people towards theatres. This led to 16:9 screens, etc. etc.

In conclusion why a square?

It's almost all based on preference and budget. If you want the best colors it will be $40,000. If you want more budget options you'll be at 1080p opposed to 4K. Same goes for screen size and panel type and so on

Your needs seem to revolve around form factor, and not display technology. Any display will suffice for YouTube. Maybe consider a tablet/laptop/AIO?

Well it depends on the use case.

  • Professional work
  • Semi professional work
  • media consumption
  • Casual gaming
  • Competitive gaming
  • office work.

As such you would look for:

  • For professional work it will be color accuracy,color gamut, resolution & aspect ratio, and size.
  • For semi professional it will be color accuracy, color gamut, and price
  • For media it will be contrast, uniformity , brightness, HDR, price, possible also size
  • For casual gaming it would be size resolution, refresh, VRR, contrast, price, uniformity and HDR.
  • For competitive gaming ull be looking for VRR, Refresh, Pixel response, and input lag
  • For office work the most important things will be price and ergonomics.

 

From there you can narrow down the search based on some knowledge about display tech and any specific requirments.

 

TN LCD panels generally favor gaming and 'cheap' bare bones displays

IPS LCD panels favor accuracy, wide color gamuts, and wide viewing angles. Good for professional work

VA LCD panels favor media consumption with their better contrast and more uniform panels

 

but each type also has fatal flaws that make them less desired for certain things.

 

TN have terrible picture quality, especially in regards to contrast, uniformity, color accuracy and gamut, and viewing angles.

IPS suffers from IPS glow and tend to have poor dark uniformity making them less desirable for viewing in dark rooms and indeed viewing dark content on the display itself.

VA suffers from slow pixel response times, especially in dark scenes, they also have poor viewing angles.

 

Theres a whole lot more information u can find about LCD tech and monitors, and what specs mean and whats test results mean. U can check that out on sites like rtings.com and tftcentral.co.uk.

 

Now u also have OLED. Problem here is that its currently restricted to 55"+ TV's, so rather pointless to discuss it for office use. Needless to say OLED is almost perfect. VS LCD OLED out performs LCD in every way, and has none of the downside of any of the 3 LCD types.. BUT it has 1 flaw of its own. Being based on organic materials the sub pixels can degrade if the same color is constantly being produced, this results in what people call 'burn-in'. Without varied content being displayed, burn in can occur, so use as an office display is unadvised.

 

QLED is also sometimes mentioned but thats just a marketing term used to describe a LCD with Quantom Dot tech used its design. Usually a VA ..sometimes IPS, panel with QD enhances color and contrast. its not technically another panel type.

 

There is no 'best' option im afraid. the display industry is one of compromise.

The good news is, if u dont give a damn about picture quality or its capabilities and just care about ergonomics ..the entire display lineup is an option, VA, TN, IPS ..all 3 are fine as a display tech in that regards, all u need to know about is the chassis of the display effectively. The stand , the physical size , etc. That can be found by simply looking at the specs or viewing the unit in a shop showroom.

since what im ideally looking for doesnt exist really,

 

i've been able to come up with a a new requirement (the only main requirement):

 

highest total pixel within the display size limits/restricctions mentioned in op
