hi everyone i am new and need help i have just got my son a new motherboard it was the GIGABYTE 970A-DS3P to upgrade his ASUS MSA78L-MLY3 can someone tell me if i need to get a new operating system?

You may not need to.  Have you built the system yet?  If you have then you can just turn it back on with the old Windows install and see if Windows will activate.  If it doesn't automatically you might be able to get it to, but you'll need to Google as I forgot any steps you would need to take.  I switched motherboards and didn't need a new Windows key.

You need to tie your Windows product key to your Microsoft account, then use that Microsoft account to login to that Windows install.

No, but Windows has made it so you have to jump though a hoop or two when changing motherboards. Your best option would probably be to setup a Microsoft Acc and connect the Windows product key to it.

 

That way Windows doesn't crap itself when it sees the motherboard was swapped.

If you still have the box for Windows the Code should be able to be reused. Another way is to open a ticket with Microsoft at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/contactus/. You can email them and explain that you purchased a new motherboard and that you need your windows key to move over to your new motherboard. Note that you still need to know your windows key. They allowed myself to move my key and I cannot guarantee that for everyone. But the easiest way is to have your key set to your Microsoft account as others have advised.

I don't do that.  I only use a local account.
